FORMER CUP DRIVER FATHER OF RONNIE THOMAS

From the members

The clown prince of racing, a very talented driver, comedian, freind and mentor. Jabe helped me through some tough times has been a inspiration to me. He never forgets to call me on my birthday and Christmas some 25 yrs later. Had a great time with him travelling across the country and laughed until my sides were sore. Jabe will always be a hero to me….Randy

I met Jabe in 1968 while helping Larry Manning from Richmond. When we got to the track Jabe was always one of my favorite people to be around. In the days of the largely independent racers he was one of the best to associate with. A serious racer while being light hearted yet always competeing to the best of his abilities. I was an impressionable 18 year old kid and Jabe was the real deal when it came to someone to look up to. I can’t remember seeing Jabeafter late 68 or early 69 but he made an impression on a young man such that I will never forget having known and been around him. A sothern gentleman,a real role model anda keen since of humortoo!
He is still the same ol Jabe. A great individual and as funny as ever. Has many many stories to spin out….
I’ll always recall the radio announcers chronicling Jabe’s pitstops to “get a sandwich!”

Jabe was always great to me and would keep me laughing for hours on end.

When I started my own race shop, Jabe gave me my first job, to build a Baby Grand car for Ronnie.

It went quite well. As I recall the story from Jabe, Ronnie ran so well that a competitor bought that car after several races. (can anyone clear that up or add to it in any way????)

Before that I was working in Spartanburg for John Green and we were building Jabe a new Dodge race car, and Richard called and asked Jabe if he could buy the car from him. It appears that the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC wanted a Petty car and they didn’t have a ‘spare’ available, so they bought the one that we built for Jabe. It is my understanding that it is still on display there.
