When Junie Donlavey Closed His Door

When Junie Donlavey Closed His Door

by: PattyKay Lilley

Ten years ago, in 2002, a door closed, the echo of which is still resounding in the hallowed halls of NASCAR history. On that day, drivers and race fans bade a sad farewell to one of NASCAR’s all-time greats, when Wesley C. “Junie” Donlavey announced that he was closing his storied Donlavey Racing shop in Richmond Virginia and planned to enjoy a well-earned retirement with his beloved wife Phyllis.

I’m not at all sure that I possess enough adjectives or superlatives to impart to you my admiration and respect for Junie Donlavey, but I have to try.  This warmhearted native of Richmond, Virginia is more than worthy of whatever praises I can sing here, and deserving of so much more.

Junie is an original, in every sense of the word.  Admittedly, I am old, but Junie makes me look young, if one is counting years alone.  He will turn 88 on April 8 of this year.  When his long run came to an end, Read On!

FEBRUARY 21, 2012 LEGENDTORIAL

Well, well, well.  Here I am the Tuesday AFTER the Shootout and the Tuesday BEFORE the 54th Annual Daytona 500.  So much could be said, so much to be talked about, but tonight, I just want to throw some things out as my thoughts and things that have been going through my mind these past few days.

I may have mentioned this last week, but I think it bears repeating and maybe even a little further explanation.  As has been stated here by many, applauded by  some and booed by others, I am a very opinionated individual.  I believe what I believe and while I’m usually willing to listen to what others have to say, there are times when I am so overbearing that Ms. Ann has to kick me under the table at the Wednesday night dinners at church.  Jeff has forbidden political discussions here on the site and that is probably the single most positive reason he has only deleted my page ONE time.  I bring this to your attention because, in case you haven’t noticed, I have been a kinder, gentler Legend the past several weeks.  I didn’t even mute my tv when D.W. got on the Boogity wagonSaturday night. For me, that is a huge step!  To recite my dislike of that mantra he uses to start a race would be as repetitive as the praise D.W. is constantly heaping on Kyle Busch. Read On!

FEBRUARY 14, 2012 LEGENDTORIAL

Ok, I am betting that every man listening to this show tonight knows already, or has been reminded by thousands of radio, television and newspaper ads that today is Valentine’s Day.  If, by now, you have not already gifted your sweetheart with a card, candy, flowers, or other gifts, or combination of gifts, it is a pretty good bet Fido is going to be in the house tonight and YOU and going to be outside in Fido’s little house.  That is NOT a sexist statement, it is just what you are led to believe if you pay attention to the advertisements.  I love the ones where you are being enticed, in fact, almost threatened with disaster if you don’t buy your sweetheart a new Lexus, Infiniti, or a couple hundred thousand dollars worth of diamonds.   I am very fortunate that Ms. Ann is content with our home and the fact that we have each other and it is not necessary to spend so much money.  A dozen roses where $18.00 last week and this week those same dozen roses are $70.00 WITHOUT a vase.  And you think florist are not crooks!!!!!  And to any florist listening, I am NOT going to apologize for that.

So, most of you, I’m guessing already know from where the St. Valentine’s Day tradition arose.  For those who don’t a brief summary from Wickipedia says that St. Valentine was a Christian matyr whom Pope Gelasuis I canonized in 496 A.D. Pope Paul the SIXTH deleted him from the General Roman Calendar in 1969. Obviously Hallmark Greeting Cards didn’t make a large enough contribution to the Catholic Church in 1968.  But it didn’t matter. The Day is still around every February 14th. Read On!

An Earnhardt Kind of Day

By PattyKay Lilley

The date was February 15, 1998. The place was Daytona International Speedway and the event was the Great American Race, the Daytona 500. The day dawned with threatening dark clouds, a chilling wind and a weather forecast that called for rain. Still, excitement was running high as the new season prepared to get underway. After all, no Daytona 500 had ever been rained out on its given Sunday and the racing world hoped that “Bill France weather” would prevail for this one as well.

Back then, a perennial question had become very much a part of the ceremonies surrounding the race. “Can the Intimidator finally win the Daytona 500?” This race marked the fortieth running of Big Bill France’s dream race and it would chronicle the twentieth attempt by the “Man in Black” to conquer the giant Superspeedway in the biggest race of all. Tissot Sets Sights on 2012 Kingsport Speedway NASCAR Championship

ASHEVILLE, N.C. — It was a given Lee Tissot would strap in behind the wheel of a race car, after all he had grown up watching his father, Randy Tissot, compete with NASCAR’s biggest names such as Richard Petty, David Pearson, Bobby Allison, Cale Yarborough, Buddy Baker and others during the 1970s and 1980s.

After finishing third in Street Stock points in 1988 at New Asheville Speedway, young Lee was hooked on racing and he’s been on the fast-track to success ever since. He captured the Late Model rookie of the year title in 1991 on “The River,” and consistently finished top-five in points each year before putting together back-to-back championship campaigns in 1998 and ’99 at the track. This Saturday, February 11, marks the 18th anniversary of the death of race car driver and broadcaster Neil Bonnett at Daytona in 1994. For an old-timer like me, it is quite startling to realize that some of you reading this today have no memory whatsoever of this wonderful man unless your parents have told you about him. If you’ll keep reading, I hope to rectify that.

AMERICAN DRAG RACING LEGEND CARL OLSON ENTERS BRITISH DRAG RACING’S HALL OF FAME

Starting in 2006, each year the British Drag Racing Hall of Fame, in association with US Automotive, has honoured those who, over the years, have made a significant and lasting difference to the development of drag racing in the UK. Full details and longer citations of all the inductees since 2006 can be found on www.britishdragracinghof.co.uk.

This year American drag racing legend and Quarter Mile Foundation board member Carl Olson is one of five new inductees. After a racing career during which he won many Top Fuel dragster titles he was appointed NHRA Vice President responsible for International Relations. In 1993 he became President of the FIA Drag Racing Commission, responsible for all international drag racing. He used his influence to raise the status of European drag racing to stand alongside other forms of motor sport and produce the fantastic European Championships we enjoy today. It is for this work that he has been inducted into the British Drag Racing Hall of Fame. Read On!
