The Georgia 500 Late Model Sportsman race was held at the ½ paved middle Georgia Raceway in Byron, GA on November 10, 1974. The race was not sectioned by Nascar, but was by an organization called “STARS” (Short Track Auto Racing Systems). The National Galaxy Division was open to 1964-1975 model cars. Jody Ridley won the pole with a speed of 91.60 mph for the 500 lap race. Jerry Lawley was leading coming out of the 4th turn on the last lap when he, Cale Yarborough, and Larry Phillips got together. Yarborough was given the checkered flag, but later after a scorecard check was found to be a lap down, so the win went to Lawley. Ronnie Sanders was actually driving the Lawley car for the final 100 laps. There were 16 caution flags in the event before the reported 10000 fans. Lawley took home $7000 from the $30000 purse for the victory.

Not a asheville or hickory driver in there, nascar must have threatened them pretty good for them not to run for a $7000 purse.

Paul - Not only no Hickory, or Asheville divers, but no NC drivers at all. This was also the same date (Nov 10, 1974) as the big Charlotte 500 double header at Metrolina.Jack

Found this article about the 1974 Georgia State 500 in the [ January 1975 issue of Flying magazine ]. Apparently Bobby Allison turned his car over to Neil Bonnett pretty early in the race. (Click to open larger version in a new tab.)
