Marty Robbins

I was going through my old trunk last week and I was supprised to the old 45’s that I still have of Marty Robbins. Marty was one of the greats at the Grand Ole Opry on Saturday nights. He was one of my favorite country music singers. His voice was so pure.

I never meet him in person.

i got to meet marty a few time. spuer nice guy
I was at Michigan international speedway the day that Marty finished 5th what a day.
I used to see Marty race every Saturday night at the Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway. He was a great competiter and a super nice guy. I was able to speak with him on numerous occasions.

I met marty a couple of times. He was a super nice guy. He had never met me or my dad before. He talked to us like we were old friends. We were at cotton owens race shop. Cotton Was Working on his Race car I think it was the dodge magnum.Garry Sweeney
Marty was a good driver and alot of fun to be around at the track or at the motel. Their was never a dull moment with Marty around he would be pulling a prank or singing poolside for friends and fans or having a party. Great man and a friend. He left us with alot of good memories.
Am thinking about using the purple and yellow colors on my next Vintage Stock car. Anybody know the name/ part number of the colors? Also didn’t realize Marty had so many different numbers.
Started watching Marty race at Highland Rim Speedway 63-64……a little 1/4 mile dirt outside of Nashville in his #777 ’34 Ford”Devil Woman” Modified Special. Car was built by Peacher & Bud Hamilton (Bobby Hamilton’s grandfather & Dad).Does anyone have any photos of Devil Woman ???All I have is one from an old album cover.PDM….They have an exhibit at the Country Music Hall of Fame on Marty last year (may still have it) that had the paint cans for Marty’s unique purple & yellow colors.I knew I should have written down the paint numbers !!!
Was able to obtain a copy of Marty’s movie “Hell On Wheels”. Pretty 60’s standard fare, I guess. Although there is some pretty neat race car shots. The vintage car I am building is using nearly the same body as the 777, (although I think it is a Plymouth Valiant and mine is a ’62 Dodge Lancer) Almost the same, but not exactly.
PDM……Marty’s 777 from the movie “Hell On Wheels” was a ’62 Plymouth Fury also built by Preacher Hamilton.”Hell On Wheels” shows a lot of actual race footage from the 1966Southern 300 ar Nashville
I never met him, but he was one of my favorite singers. I helped write a song about him.I had no idea what all he had accomplished in racing until a few years ago.
I remember sitting in the stands at Charlotte and watching Marty turn his car into the outside wall, to avoid hitting another driver in the drivers side door. What a man of character. The music, The racing, The man.
This is my Tribute art work to honor the driving career of Marty Robbins

Wrote a song about it, wantta hear it.
MY DAD, “SLICK POSTON”, A MUSICIAN, WAS A GREAT FRIEND AND FAN OF MARTY ROBBINS.

This is one of my first racing interviews at the 1979 Winston 500. Marty made it easy on me…he was great. I think the footage of this story was donated to the Country Music Hall of Fame.
Racing has clearly grown too big (and lawsuits!) to accommodate someone like Marty. And that’s a shame. I’d really like to hear more about how Marty surrendered his long used #42 to Kyle Petty when he started. I’m sure he gave it up generously, but I’m curious if Marty approached the Pettys or if the Pettys approached him.

Hi, Great Site, Little story about Marty for everyone. My dad was racing somewhere with Marty in the Grand American Series in the early 1970’s and Marty needed a ride to the airport so my dad gave him one. On the way, Marty grabbed all of my dad’s cassettes, threw them out the window and put his own in. My dad loved it! I love always hearing about it, ask him about it still all the time, even though I know the story inside and out. I met him a few times, I was only young but like most drivers I have ever met from local dirt track to cup, he was a perfect gentleman and very friendly. Thanks for the site. new member – James Trout

I remember, in the early 70’s at Atlanta, the announcer asked Richard Petty what kind of driver Marty was. Richard said “Marty can drive better than most of these drivers can sing”!
