old savannha speedway
believe it or not my mom and dad ran the track from 69, 70 ,71,also ran the dragstrip up above the speedway .we lived in a mobile home in the pit area .i have alot of fond memories,of that era.lynn warlaw was announcer then at the track and the dragstrip.my uncle bobby miller was the founder of the dragstrip,i also worked at the dragstrip when it was1/4 mile track,i reameber, bobby brooks who drove a 32 english ford called halve breed.i can see me now putting either bleach,or joy dish soap for the drivers to do their burn outs.my dads name was jerry or gearld burtron, some knew him as jerry some knew him as gearld.my mom worked conncessions and my dad ran the ticket booth and kept the grounds up at the speedway.

My Dad ran the infield compressor truck for GoodYear back in the late 60’s. It was a GMC with GoodYear decals. If anyone has an infield shot of that truck would greatly appreciate. I was only about 6 or 7 years old at the time but still remember the sound when he fired-up that compressor !
I am doing newspaper research at the UGA Library on Savannah Speedway but need input from some of those that ran there. Is Cecil Sommers the same as Sam Sommers? Saw where he started in the Hobby(?) Division and then moved up. I saw somewhere the Kruger Johnson was still kicking. How many of you guys are still going?
my mom and dad ran the track from 69 till 71 also ran the dragstrip in front of old speedway we lived in a mobilehome in the pits. my mom worked conncessions, and lynn waterlogg was announcer,my dad gearld burton ran the ticket booth. and took care of grounds.i have old 8mm film from some of the races but they are so old dont know if i can get them conferted over to dvd.
my wife for most of the time that the track was paved was Tommy Porter’s daughter and while I’ve been to and seen a ton of races in my 60 years, I don’t know if any were any better than the Fri. night battles between Tommy and Sam Sommers and especially when they would have a 200 lapper or a double points race that would bring Jack Ingram, Sammy Ard, Butch Lindley and all the other LMS guys. Boscoe Lowe and Dale Sr. were among the semi-regulars and Billy Fields in the announcer booth was worth the price of admission alone…
