Many fond Friday night memories of Danny Lee racing our #11 ’55 Chevy Limited Sportsman on that ole slick red clay in the early 70s. A fun place.

Mike,

I remember a driver by the name of Glenn Simpkins that ran some at Sanford and Rockingham in the late ’60’s. By chance is he the same guy that you list as one of the owners of Wake County Speedway?

Dennis, Glenn also ran at Wilson.

Wake County Speedway around 1973-1974

I remember Glen Simpkins racing at Rambi Raceway in Myrtle Beach, driving a green-ish blue ’37 Ford #22. Glen’s car had the first quick-change rear end I ever saw.

This post is not about Wake County Speedway but since Glenn Simpkins name has come up here this is as good a place as any. A two week span in June of 1967 was very productive for Glenn. It all started on the 16th at Sanford Motor Speedway in Sanford, N.C. when Simpkins, driving his first race since being suspended for attending an unsanctioned track, took the lead in the Late Model event on lap 32 and lead the rest of the way in his ’61 Ford #50. Seems as though the Independent Racing Association (IRA) frowned on guys running at tracks not run by them, but as has been shown Mr. Simpkins ran a lot of different tracks. The next night at the Rockingham Speedway Glenn finished second to Tommy Bostick. Then on the 23rd back at Sanford he, Tommy Bostick, Wayne Andrews and Glen McDuffie waged a crowd pleasing – lead swapping battle for most of the race until the Tommy Bostick took the checkered flag followed by Glenn Simpkins in second and Wayne Andrews third. The very next night at Rockingham Glenn made it three seconds in a row. As the saying goes “You can’t win ’em all” so this was the next best thing.

My Pop came in 7th position!!!
