It was a hot July night in 1958, the 12th to be exact, and the NASCAR boys were at Columbia Speedway on the half-mile dirt track out on highway 321 in Cayce, SC. The Grand National cars had been there in April when Speedy Thompson took home the win, then again in June with Junior Johnson being the victor. They would return again in August with Speedy winning his second race of the year at this track. But, on this night the Convertible series was in town and, as usual for Columbia Speedway, a good crowd was on hand for the most popular pass-time in the midlands during this era.
