Ta Da ! After a brief handshake and formalities, we went hiking across a plowed field and into the edge of pine trees that have stood guard over this piece of local history. Naturally ol' Mother Nature has taken her toll, just like on us, but after a few questions about who, when, and where, we finally agreed on a mutual price. The landowner even offered to drag it out into a clearing with his tractor so I could load it up on my rollback for the ride back to my shop.
Attn: Mr. Dennis Andrews, this one raced at your famed Bennett Speedway, and a few more at Biscoe Speedway in nearby Troy, NC. Car was owned by a salesman ( Jesse Owens) for Montgomery Motors right there in Troy. He passed away in 2009 and his widow was the reason for the rescue squad's visit earlier.
According to a surviving daughter and son-in-law, it was powered with a big block....352? 390? 427? as a powerhouse modified. Family albums have been tossed aside and this "IS" the only remnants of what's left.
The daughter remembers her dad painting the car with a gallon of house paint and a brush early on a Saturday morning before heading out to the race track where she was stung by a wasp while climbing the wooden bleachers to watch the night's excitement at Bennett. OUCH! I guess that will be forever imbedded in her mind as a great big pain in the foot!
I've got several projects before I can even think about getting started on this one, BUT I've managed to rescue it from its nesting spot and those dreaded "CRUSHER JAWS." Hope everyone enjoys the pics of my 4th of July fireworks.
