The One (or two) That Got Away

Anyway, this is a reunion site, and if I was sitting around in a lawn chair talking with everyone this would be my two-cents worth. In the small town where I live there was this nice little 32 bantam altered sitting in a garage for several years. I asked the owners a few times if they would sell. (I have seen this car run and win at our local dragstrip in the late 80’s-early 90’s). In 2006 I was working in my shop one day and the individuals called me and decided to sell the altered and gave me first shot at it. I scrounged the money up and purchased it! I guess where I am heading to is this: first off , this was a 113” wheelbase box tubing bottom rail car with ladderbars and a torsion bar with straight axle up front. This car was built by Bob Sloan in the early seventies. This was one awesome little car. The car worked great, was dependable, and very consistent. My son was in a high school auto body class at the time and they painted the car, we built a motor and transmission, we took turns driving it and just had a ball! But what is really amazing was how this car has stood the test of time. Second, this car showed the great craftsmanship of what Bob could do.

Bob started Sloans Racing Transmissions about the same time he built this car and I believe he could drive anything, even if it was out of shape. As a kid at Motion Raceway I remember Bob wearing his beard and looking tough. He has always been a racing hero of mine. We lost Bob last year to cancer, there were many sad people around here. As everyone knows life sort of goes on and we have many good memories of people just like Bob. As for the car, we raced it for three years then sold it to fund my daughter’s front engine dragster (which she raced for three years and then I sold it). I know, two nice cars that are now gone. The altered is still making laps down the dragstrip in Kentucky and the dragster went to Pennsylvania. We are still racing and keeping our family time as much as we can. (we do get together as a family outside the dragstrip, also!) Well, there is my story of the two that got away. I hope everyone has a great day.

Talk to you later
