Drivers and mechanics were closing the garage door,
as an oily wrench fell onto the shop floor.
As the grease-monkey returned to his humble home,
the house was quiet as he let out a long moan.
The wife and kids were all warm in their beds,
as he put on his pajamas, all in red.
His son wanted a new carburetor, for his fast hot rod,
for which he would then tear up the neighbor's new sod.
The daughter wanted a doll that said ya'll,
as her car-wrenching dad wanted homemade alcohol.
But his wife was the most complex of them all,
as her wish was for a quarter-horse, named Paul.
While all were asleep, a sound could be heard far into the night,
for it was an overhead valve flathead, roaring with all its might!
As the roar got close, it grew so loud,
why it would've made an entire pit crew proud.
As dim headlights shot past the fairgrounds park,
dogs knew the once-a-year thrill, but they still barked
An old Ford coupe, colored red and green,
pulled into the drive.....it was quite a scene!
For it was old St. Nick who opened the door,
but it looked as if, he could fall through a floor.
Wearing a red and white suit clad with a Firestone patch,
he moved towards the house, opening the fence latch.
On his back he would carry,
enough goodies to make children merry.
He scoured the rooms of the old house,
to find the tree where he would hide the Mrs.' new blouse.
He came upon one room, where he sensed great joy,
he opened the door, where he found a sleeping youngster, named Roy.
He searched high and low, but no tree could be found,
but where could he leave the presents...not on the ground!
Nick found the trophy room where a small tree was placed,
he quickly set the gifts, right next to the base.
There were dozens of trophies from all around,
all were small, but their stories were loud.
They read: Lakewood, Daytona, Columbia and Raleigh,
this made the old man especially jolly!
After a few minutes of looking around,
St. Nick loaded up for the next town.
He walked out to his hot rod painted red and green,
he found his key and fired up the machine.
Elvis was singing 'Blue Christmas' on the radio,
as Old St. Nick was finishing his last Oreo.
In just a second, his taillights were out of sight,
for in the morning, the families eyes would be bright.
The next morning was peaceful one,
with new gifts being unpackaged, it seemed as if the racer, didn't get none.
During Christmas breakfast, a note was found,
it read that the driver's gift was too large and too round.
It prompted the man to walk outside,
where he found a brand new racecar, bearing his name on the side.
He jumped in delight,
as he couldn't wait to see how it would run on track during the night.
St. Nick was pulling his own street machine into his North Pole stall,
where his elves would prepare the car starting next Fall.
He was imagining the look on the small time racer's face,
when he saw for the first time, his new racecar, that would go faster than at caution pace.
Christmas day would come and go,
as the driver would get back to work, you know.
He just couldn't wait till next year,
when maybe he could catch Santa; and the two could have a beer.
