June 29, 1958 - Petty cars dominated the top 10 in a 200-lapper at Asheville-Weaverville Speedway.
- Rex White sat on the pole, led 127 of 200 laps, and won the race in a #44
Julian Petty? - owned Chevrolet. - Driving #4, Jim Paschal finished 4th and Bob Welborn in #49 finished 7th in two more Julian Petty Chevrolets.
- Lee Petty finished 6th in his Petty Engineering #42 Olds.
And just for good measure, Possum Jones finished 22nd in a 4th 3rd Julian-owned and prepared Chevy.
In addition to Possum, the race featured some great nicknames including:
- Speedy Thompson
- Tootle Estes
- Shorty Rollins
- Brownie King, and
- Cotton Owens
Now...before anyone responds, right before I clicked "Add Discussion" I decided to refer to Greg Fielden's 40 Years and Perry Allen Wood's Silent Speedway books for more info about this race. I noticed both books indicated Rex's car was fielded by Max Welborn - not Julian Petty. I got Julian's name from Racing-Reference.info. I'll now go there and submit a correction - or at least a question.
