Ever since I found my niche [auto racing] it seems my old friends have faded away, not due to their lack of trying to maintain a constant friendship with me rather, my lack of pursuing constant friendship with them. Oh, we keep in touch and they want to hear the latest news on how I did at the track or who won the latest NASCAR race but, we just don't drink beer and barbecue anymore, my time is spent with the people that I'm most familiar with now, the racing community.
Do I wish my old friends would come aboard and share in the memory making experience of auto racing? You bet! As a matter of fact I've invited them more times than I care to remember but, racing just hasn't bit them on the 9 inch rear end like it has me. Racing runs through my veins now; I've given up hunting, fishing, traveling, going to the thrift store with my wife, all for the love of racing.
There are days I feel like hanging up the helmet for a fishing pole or shotgun but, every time that Saturday night at the track experience comes around I start making plans, adjustments to the car, and grabbing my helmet for one more go-round. Yep, I've been accused of being "addicted to racing." and by gosh I think my old friends are right!
