"Old" Gordon?

I've always been a fan of Jeff Gordon, and Ray Evernaham...the combination, in its prime, was among the best to ever play the game. I remember years when Gordon fans had to virtually exist underground as the animosity aimed at Wonder Boy was constant, insane, and non-stop..and that was beforethe internet. However, after Ray, and after Brook, and after kids it seemed like Jeff was going down the path..................Back in the day, he'dfinda way to win. As Ray once stated.....Jeff Gordon don't have many 2nd place finishes, if he's that close, he'll find a way to win.........and it was true.

In recent years, it seemed Jeff just didn't put that extra ummph into it. The car was too loose, or too tight, or it was that infernal aero-push, or just continually get slower as the race progressed. And, unlike in the Ray days, no amount of adjustments, or heroics, could (or would) fix it. It seemed Jeff was content to ride the ride. The fire-in-the-belly was (indeed) a dying ember.

Saturday night's unlikely and dramatic series of events at Richmond, was classic Gordon and crew. The oldrefuse to loose attitude was back. Will we see the 'old' Gordon in the Chase? Could be interesting.

part of jeff slowing up was due to a bad back - he still has some back problems - ray and jeff go way back - ray drove modifieds untill a head injury in a crash - then was a chassis man for the iroc cars - when jeff first started in busch he drove a outback steakhose car - i think it was a pontiac owned by a guy named hugh cant remember his last name - anyway it was for a few races and evernham was the crewchief - many dont remember this but ray worked for alan kulwicki - they couldnt stand each other - didnt last long - but when he left alan lee morse of ford paid rays salary to work at bill davis racing - bill didnt want him - anyway hendrick got them both - i know ray couldnt turn down the dodge deal - but ever wonder if he hadnt left hendrick - it was all wonder boy then and for a while nascar had a hands off policy on him - but he has won everything there is to win in nascar - has a family now - and security that helps to mellow things out - but a bad back is what really bothers him .

When Jeff was interviewed at Richmond walking down pit road in the rain with his head hanging down, I wouldn't have bet a solitary dollar on his chances. It was quite an amazing comeback. One can only wonder what would have happened had Jeff & Ray stayed together.

Jeff didn't look old enough to be out of high school when he wheeled that Bill Davis Baby Ruth Busch Ford, but he was amazing in it.

David, Bud Moore always said that Lee Morse did more to keep Ford competitive than anybody. He found the old 351 block castings in Australia, etc. Lee was very highly thought of by the old main line Ford guys like Bud and the Wood Brothers.

There sure did seem to be a fire burning again in Jeff's belly, Bobby. When have ever seen a driver celebrate 2nd place like Jeff did Saturday night?

That Hugh Connerty owned Outback Steakhouse Pontiac ran one time. Jeff started 2nd in the Fall 1990 AC-Delco 200 Busch race at Rockingham and crashed out very early.
