Back in the days when the July 4th race at Daytona was actually held on July 4th... back when it was called the Firecracker 400 and not the Pepsi 400 nor Coke 400... back when Pure was the official gasoline and not Unocal, Union nor Sunoco and back when the Darel racing for Junior Johnson was Dieringer - not Waltrip, ABC Wide World of Sports taped the 1967 Firecracker 400.
This very short 2-3 minute clip of the finish finds Fred Lorenzen explaining to announcer Jim McCay why the lead cars seem to be backing up - setting up for the slingshot... remember that?
Running nose-to-tail in 1967 Fords with two laps to go are Dick Hutcherson in the Bondy Long #29, Cale Yarborough in the Wood Brothers #21 and Darel Dieringer in the Junior Johnson #26.
The color commentator was Fred Lorenzen and that's Chris Economaki in Victory Lane. Dieringer would be released 5 races later by Junior following Martinsville in favor of LeeRoy Yarbrough, a short-lived collaboration that would have earned a Winston Million in 1969 had there been one.
