On the night of July 9, 1964  the NASCAR Modifieds were racing at Hampton, Virginia's Langley Field Speedway. I had no information on this race, but Jack Walker has furnished it in a post below. Getty Images has an ISC Archives photo of cigar chomping Eddie Crouse of Glen Allen, Virginia - 1962 & 1963 NASCAR National Modified Champion - ready for action.

Crouse is not in his old #1va Bud Walmsley / Shirley Construction ride that took him to his two NASCAR Championships, but in a car #55 that I don't recognize.

Anybody know whose car this was? Little Bud Moore drove a #55 Modified at Langley in the October 1964 Ray Platte Memorial race, while Crouse drove a #31 - a number normally driven art Langley by Gene Lovelace . Doug Yates drove the old Crouse 1va Modified in that race, before it was turned over to Lennie Pond .

And... check this wonderful photo of Eddie Crouse on stage in Daytona in January 1963 at the NASCAR Awards Banquet celebrating 1962 champions with a few other faces you'll recognize. This photo is also from the ISC Archives via Getty Images. The other cigar chomper, besides Crouse, is the late Rene Charland ! They've got Little Joe Weatherly and Robert Arthur Allison surrounded!

Dave - Here is the race report from Southern MotorSports Journal about the July 9th, 1964 Langley race. There's no info on the #55.

Thanks a million, Jack. Your resources are simply outstanding! I've changed the headline on my post to reflect the Earl Moss win.

Very, very interesting to see a Sportsman car run 2nd in a major 100-lap Modified-Sportsman race. That's a very young 15 year old Randy Hutchinson in 28th. He'd later, at a still very young age, race NASCAR GT and Grand American cars.

10th place finisher Shelton McNair was from Plymouth, NC and was a regular competitor at Wilson County Speedway in the 70s driving his potent red  M-1 Chevelle late models.

The July 9, 1964 Langley Field Modified 10th place finisher Shelton McNair was the proprietor of McNair Oil Company in Plymouth, North Carolina, a gateway to North Carolina's outer banks. ironically, McNair once set a flying mile speed record on the sands of Daytona Beach driving a fuel injected '57 Chevy. RR member, Tim Hamm some years back posted these photos of the bespeckled McNair at Wilson County Speedway in 1975 with his 1964 Chevelle and in 1976 with a 1969 Chevelle - both painted in his usual red livery carrying the number M-1.
