Beginning in 1955, Bowman Gray Stadium annually staged the Tobacco Bowl modified race around New Year's Day. The 1959 edition, held on Saturday, January 3rd, was won by Carl Burris over Curtis Turner, winner of the first two Tobacco Bowls in 1955 and 1956.
Jack Walker's rundown is a day different - but looks like same race.
THE 5th Annual Tobacco Bowl was scheduled to be run on Thursday Jan 1st, but because of rain was rescheduled and run on Saturday Jan 3rd, 1959.
Thank you for the correction, Chase & Jack. Google News Archive has the wrong date cataloged on the story from the Daytona paper. When I scroll to the top of the paper it is clearly the Sunday, January 4th edition, as is the coverage from Spartanburg and Lexington, NC newspapers.

The 1959 Tobacco Bowl race was originally scheduled for Saturday, December 27, 1958. The race was postponed to New Year's Day 1959, but it was postponed a second time to January 3.
