You go to Daytona with ONE car and enter the race, with one car, and go away from Daytona $250,000 richer. Yea Yippee, you are on top of the world. You and your skeleton crew are happy as all get out. You park at the motel to rest. Sometime during the night POOF its stolen. Can you believe this?

Team owner John Cohen told USA Today Sports that the team will enter the event next weekend at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Cohen said he didn't have an estimate on the value of the race car.

The only lead, he said, was a surveillance video showing the team's unmarked dually trailer being stolen with the car inside. The team hauler with tools was already at AMS.

"All we know is it was a silver jeep," Cohen said. "One guy got out and they pulled off together."

Travis Kvapil was preparing to attempt to qualify for Sunday's race in the car Friday afternoon at 5:45. Now car 44 has withdrawn from the race. distance to participate.

According to the police report, surveillance footage captured part of the theft. At 5:25 a.m., a newer model silver or grey Jeep Cherokee was observed driving into the Drury Inn parking lot. It was seen returning at 5:32 a.m.; two minutes later, the trailer and the car inside were seen leaving the property.

Team Xtreme crew chief Peter Sospenzo called police at 5:52 a.m. to report the trailer missing.

According to the police report, the car is valued at $250,000. A backup engine also inside the trailer is valued at $100,000 and there was $17,500 worth of other equipment in the trailer.

"It would be a loss if we couldn't locate the vehicle," Oglesby said.

Now whats your take on this? As hard as it is to build a car without losing it (as I did when my trailer with so much stuff on it to finish our car got stolen from my shop) Life is so cruel sometimes !!

Johnny, that area south of Hartsfield airport, between Forest Park and Riverdale is where all the teams, media and sponsors stayed when I was working Atlanta races in the 80s-90s.

Some of you older folk like me will remember back when a Georgia Grand National racer was arrested and charged with being part of an auto theft ring.

Well the story has already got holes in it -- The thieves have been seen in a Jeep Cherokee by surveillance, but AP says the Cops say they drove it away hooked to a pickup truck.... Hmmmm

DIDN'T ALL NASCAR RACECARS HAVE GPS COMPUTER CHIPS IN THEM TO TELL NASCAR THE LOCATIONS OF THE RACECARS ?

Thanks for any information or photos posted.

thats a good question -- transponders that are used at the track are taken out after the race? or do you buy one and it belongs with the car like Onstar

Here's a little food for thought.....

A year ago in January, Travis Kvapil was CONVICTED in a North Carolina court of domestic assault on his wife for pulling her by the hair and striking her head. He was sentenced to two years probation, but NASCAR took NO action.

Today, Travis' race car disappears and he withdraws from the Atlanta race.

NASCAR doesn't get any questions about why Travis is allowed to race after a Domestic Violence CONVICTION while Kurt Busch is suspended indefinitely because a judge issued a restraining order.

Perhaps NASCAR paid Mike Harmon to make an early morning visit to the motel lot and pretend he saw Jennifer Jo Cobb's rig parked there - an idea loosely based on a thought expressed by another RR member.

I would not put anything past NASCAR based on what I have seen in the past.

Dr. Evil is on the case!

Well the car has been found in suburb Atlanta. Its said to be intact BUT the trailer truck and contents in the trailer are still missing. Team is happy, they at least have their favorite car back but still out of this Sundays race. I guess that red racecar was to hard to hide but the tools and motor along with truck n trailer ---well Same as all my stuff on my trailer its gone ......!

Well, it appears that Wilson, NC thieves go for bigger game than Georgia thieves:

http://www.wilsontimes.com/News/Feature/Story/35927769---Deputies-investigate--4-million-gold-heist-off-I-95

How much you wanna bet both are inside jobs?

Better be careful if your truck has mechanical issues on I-95 in Wilson, Johnny!
