Ray Hendrick Takes Langhorne National Open - Oct. 12, 1969

On this date, October 12 in 1969, "Rapid Ray" Hendrick of Richmond, Virginia - "Mr. Modified" - was watched by 38,000 fans as he drove the famed Jack Tant / Clayton Mitchell "Flying 11" modified built in Littleton, NC to victory in the 19th National Open held at the legendary Langhorne mile oval in Pennsylvania. Hendrick, noted for racing anywhere, anytime, in any division, once again beat a who's who of racing talent including future NASCAR Hall of Fame racers Richie Evans , Jerry Cook and Benny Parsons. Starting 10th,  Hendrick would lead 196 laps of 200 and Dutch Hoag 4. Hendrick, the winningest driver in NASCAR history, has so far escaped the attention of the sanctioning body's Hall of Fame. George Meade edited 8mm film highlights of the 1969 Langhorne National Open to a 4 minute video that includes the brief battle of 40 year old 10th starting Ray Hendrick with 42 year old 2nd starting Dutch Hoag for the lead. The wily old veterans sure showed those NASCAR Hall of Famers Parsons, Cook, and Evans the short way around - AS USUAL.
