Please correct me if someone else has different information, but I was a fan at (what I was told) was Cale Yaborough's 1st Grand National win at Valdosta 75 Speedway (no longer exists) at Valdosta, GA ('65 or '66). This was a dirt track as the GN division was running both dirt & paved tracks in the '60s. On the 1st scheduled race date, Cale couldn't be there, so another driver (Sam McQuagg) was hired to drive the race car ('64 Ford). Sam was leading the race when it was rained out. Cale, a little known driver at that time, made it for the rain date race & won the race. Some other drivers I remember from the same race were Buck Baker, Ned Jarrett, Dick Hutcherson, G. C. Spencer. Interestingly, Sam McQuagg drove a Ray Fox Dodge Charger in the July race in Daytona around '66 or '67 & won that race.....for his only GN win. Sam was from Columbus, GA, was a fixture in Victory Lane at Valdosta 75 Speedway and, sadly, passed away in 2009.

Guess I was right.........I thought I remembered Buddy Baker & Wendell Scott being there also, but didn't remember for sure. Buck Baker was defending GN champion. I'm surprised I remembered te '64 Ford part. Jeff Gilder said:

I met a few drivers over the years, but the only one I actually met from this race was Tiny Lund......that's kind of an interesting story, too.
