June 29: This day in Petty AND Rex White history

June 29, 1958 - Petty cars dominated the top 10 in a 200-lapper at Asheville-Weaverville Speedway.

  • Rex White sat on the pole, led 127 of 200 laps, and won the race in a #44 Julian Petty ? - owned Chevrolet.
  • Driving #4, Jim Paschal finished 4th and Bob Welborn in #49 finished 7th in two more Julian Petty Chevrolets.
  • Lee Petty finished 6th in his Petty Engineering #42 Olds.

And just for good measure, Possum Jones finished 22nd in a 4th 3rd Julian-owned and prepared Chevy.

In addition to Possum, the race featured some great nicknames including:

  • Speedy Thompson
  • Tootle Estes
  • Shorty Rollins
  • Brownie King, and
  • Cotton Owens

Now...before anyone responds, right before I clicked "Add Discussion" I decided to refer to Greg Fielden's 40 Years and Perry Allen Wood's Silent Speedway books for more info about this race. I noticed both books indicated Rex's car was fielded by Max Welborn - not Julian Petty. I got Julian's name from Racing-Reference.info. I'll now go there and submit a correction - or at least a question.

Greg's research over the years has been exemplary with what he has had to work with.

As for Mr. Golenbock, I'm not sure that any publication in history regarding NASCAR contained more errors than his book. Ditto his book on the late Jim Valvano, the great NC State basketball coach.

Be VERY careful of your sources. Mr. Golenbock's accuracy on any subject is suspect.

I'm NOT referring to the Encyclopedia. I said BOOK. Read my post again.

I'm referring to Mr. Golenbock's NASCAR books, especially the first, "American Zoom." Filled with mistakes, just as I am told in reviews is his latest effort on Mr. Humpy Wheeler.

Again, anything in which Mr. Golenbock has had a hand is to be read and trusted with a grain of salt.

Ditto re: Humpy's book. Golenbock's book Miracle: Bobby Allison and the Saga of the Alabama Gang has many questionable references too.

Just like a Cubs fan in April, I'm always hopeful of a quality product when I read a new racing book. Sadly like a Cubs fan in September, I end up generally disappointed.

Yes he does make the big bucks and more errors than I have ever read in any other NASCAR book.

And, for the record, just in case any "newbie" happens to wander into these posts, I do want to affirm for them that you are my good FRIEND and that this is just a family discussion!

Agreed re: Zoom. While I've found many errors in his later books that affected my enjoyment of reading them, I really enjoyed Zoom. The errors are there, but they didn't take away from the flow of his stories as they did in his others IMO.

Or because I read it several years ago, I was simply too ignorant to pick up on his errors! haha

Hopefully, his writing has been financially rewarding for him. However, I doubt he has retired on the revenue streams from his books b/c he hasn't changed his name yet to Peter Goldenbuck.

Don't kid yourself Johnny. If this truly was going to be a legit scrap, Gilder would be trying to make it a pay-per-view event on RacersReunion Radio. haha

Psst, hey Dave. A tip for you -- Boxing in the 'squared circle' is no longer popular. Today, its all about the mixed martial arts stuff and Ultimate Fighting in the octagon. Here is a quick video tutorial to hone your skills.
