A few weeks ago, I scrolled through a few rolls of microfilm from the archives of the Rochester Democrat Chronicle. I was looking for info for Lee Petty's wins at Monroe County Fairgrounds in Rochester NY. While in the midst of doing so, I expanded it a bit and grabbed some screen captures of articles from races won by other drivers. One of the races I viewed some reels for was the August 15, 1952 race won by Tim Flock.
Pappy Hough won the pole for the 200-lap, 100-mile race - but didn't lead so much as one lap. George Gallup, who ran a total of 5 GN races, qualified 2nd and led 13 laps. (It truly saddens me that someone named Gallup didn't win the poll ... I mean, pole.) The rest of the top 10 starters included:
- Dutch Hoag
- Bob Schwingle (his 1st of only 2 career starts)
- Stew Hayes (his 1 and only GN start)
- Fran Jischke (2nd of 3 career starts)
- Ralph Liguori
- Slim Brown (1st of 4 career starts)
- Herb Legg (also his 1 and only GN start)
- Ted Chamberlain.
Flock started deep in the field in his Hudson - and I mean deep. He started 22nd - next to last - yet led 142 of the 176 laps en route to the win. And he had good company at the back of the field with drivers such as Herb Thomas and Lee Petty.
Rains arrived and shortened the race by 24 laps. When the checkers fell after 176 laps, the cream again rose to the top - a truism that generally prevails in racing across the decades.
Top 10 Finishers:

2 | Herb Thomas | Hudson |

8 | George Gallup | Oldsmobile |
8 | Neil Cole | Plymouth |
10 | Ralph Liguori | Ford |
