Mel was instrumental in founding Las Vegas Motor Speedway. He was one of the last surviving drivers from the inaugural Convertible Series season in 1956.

Drove Frank Steelman, Jr #9 red and white modified ford in modified championship race at Concord Speedway October 1957. Went off turn 1 in the woods, that car never raced again. This was one of Bruton Smith ideas, we did get $100 appearance money. We had two Steelman Motor cars entered that day. I think Ned Jarrett drove the other one.
