At 75, Bobby Warren Becomes First International Drag Racing Hall Of Fame Sportsman Inductee

Thursday night I had the distinct pleasure ofintroducing Bobby Warren as the first-ever Sportsman racer to become an International Drag Racing Hall Of Fame inductee.

Warren has won three NHRA World Championship crowns (70,74 & 78) and won his last race at Bristol in 2004, becoming Super Stock Elimnator at 69. He is the eldest ever to do so! At 75, he ran the Gators this past weekend driving a Red 98 Pontiac Firebird. powered by a 350 SBC with a GM "200 Metric" transmission. He tunes the car with a laptop.

Aside from his racing wins, Bobby has a compelling life story. He began as a second-generation tobacco and pig farmer who married his high school sweetheart and started drag racing. In 1972, drag racing had become so much a part of his life that he leased the farmland to a trusted family member and founded Warren Engines in Clinton, NC. It's a flourishing enterprise his two sons run today. As youmight imagine this man of the land is possessed of a quiet but deep and abiding faith, it pervades everyrhing he does. Bobby has served as Deacon at Mt.Gilead Baptist Church in Clinton. And ... BTW ... he pays cash - for everything.

Everyone I talked to about this man (family members, friends, those he's raced with and those he's beaten) mentioned his humble, kind and helpful spirit. A most worthy choice for the first Drag Racing HOF Sportsman inductee.

Onondaga Dragway - As one of its founders passes, drag racing resumes

Dave Crane, he of the cool drag racing museum in Michigan, has reported the passing of Ken Sears a member of Onondaga Dragway's founding family after a long cancer battle. This is really sad news.I worked at Onondaga beginning in 1962. One Sunday in 63, the Greek calls Ken Sears. Seems he'd had a disagreement with Detroit Dragway's Gil Kohn over a pass made by the Loukas & Priesing coupe there and had proceeded to mow down Gil's clocks on his next pass! Greek tells Sears that if he'll hold the crowd for 2 more hours, the Greek will tow to Onondaga and run the track's first 200 - off the trailer! It was already 5PM but I did and he did.The entire Sears family - three generations of them - were involved in that track. Straight-forward, hard working people of modest means who had a dream and made it work. Many good memories of that place. This is a sad day for me. Ken Sears was my friend.The track was closed and abandoned in 1982; it became a feedlot. Just below is a URL to an amatuer video of recent very laid back drag racing there. Very fundamental racing and nothing organized, no clocks and "Pinks" style starts; but racing nonetheless. Kinda neat. http://www.blip.tv/file/2639551

NATIONAL DRAGSTER -- CHRR Review Edition?

Does anyone out there have an extra edition of National Dragster that contains a review of this year's California Hot Rod Reunion? I've been told there's a photo of Dave McClelland, Bob Frey and myself taken just before the Cacklefest Parade began. Would really like to have a copy for my archive as that's only the second time in 50 years a picture of yours truly has appeared therein.Thank you!

Troops:In additon to some announcing stints (I am retired from that) I will be conducting appraisal inspections of race cars and hot rods during the California Hot Rod Reunion In Bakersfield.The event is held at Auto Club Famoso Raceway the weekend of October 15-18 and draws the finest restored, re-created and survivor race cars from drag racing's "Golden Era" 1955-70. Many gloriously expensive hot rods and the latest vintage/classic hot rods (aka "rat rods") also exhibit there.The inspection process for such cars is quite involved thus day and time appointments are necessary.
