Bristol in the 80s Short Video (1 minute, 15 seconds)

Stock Car Racing History

My first Bristol race was spring 1986. Rusty Wallace scored his 1st Cup win in the Blue Max / Alu-Gard #27 Pontiac 2+2. We walked up on race day and paid $18 for SRO. But rains moved in, and I think it washed the track down the valley about 6 feet. It poured.

A few folks brought some of those blue tarps, and about a million people squeezed under each one of them. I'm a pretty vertically challenged feller, so holding the corner of one was out of the question. Wouldn't be able to hold it above everyone's head. Fine by me - I got to stand under it and stay fairly dry.

When the rains quit & track dried, the race was on! But our plans of sitting on the bank above the backstretch were out the window because of the mud. So I stood the whole time with my toes pitched about 20 degrees lower than my heel. Ladies - I don't know how in the dickens y'all get used to wearing high heeled shoes. My feet hurt for a week after that race.

Still have my ticket stub.

March 15, 1970: King wins in Savannah Jawja

Stock Car Racing History

Richard Petty pockets the 1970 Savannah 200. I love one of the early paragraphs of the included article. Words are rarely spun this nicely in today's journalism:

For most of the capacity crowd observing the spectacle, it seemed the Randleman NC driver handled his 1970 Plymouth as effortlessly as an octogenarian on a leisurely Sunday drive.

Oddly enough, I guess that phrase may still apply to Morgan Shepherd and James Hylton.

Why Junior Johnson Hates Guardrails

Stock Car Racing History

Generally speaking, almost all drivers have 1 or 2 real doozy wrecks during the course of their career. Hopefully they are few and far between. Poor ol' Neil though. I think that dude may well have taken more vicious licks over a relatively brief span of years than almost any other driver - including sadly the one that took his life.

Snow and Dave Marcis' Final Win Overshadowed by Racing Drug Bust before Feb. 21, 1982 Richmond Cup

Stock Car Racing History

Might try to engage Gary Nelson on Twitter to see what he remembers. He was great at sharing some info with me a year or so ago about SABCO's first car for Kyle Petty and the aero work DiGard did on Bobby's 1982 Daytona Buick.

Snow and Dave Marcis' Final Win Overshadowed by Racing Drug Bust before Feb. 21, 1982 Richmond Cup

Stock Car Racing History

Marcis caught at least 3 big breaks that day:

  • A blown tire and wreck by Joe Ruttman who seemed to be class of the field at that point of the race. Ruttman was in the JD Stacy Buick serviced by crew chief ... Dale Inman.
  • The rain and ill-timed pit stops by the lead cars in front of him.
  • And a mid-race spin by Joe Millikan right in front of Marcis. - Getty Images
