Passing of Dr. Joseph Mattioli
General
Just saw the news that Dr. Joseph "Doc" Mattioli has passed away. Sad day as another good one passes.

Yep. And I lobbied for including Ralph Seagraves in the inaugural NHOF class. (I also wanted Raymond Parks in that 1st class. France Jr & Ironhead could have waited a year. But that's a different topic for a different time.)
I think T. Wayne Robertson belongs in NHOF eventually too. Whether he will remains to be seen.
January 23, 1972 - Richard Petty wins the Winston Western 500 at Riverside International Raceway in southern California. Scheduled for 191 laps on the road course, the race is shortened to 149 laps because of dense fog. The win was Petty's 141st victory - and his first with STP as his primary sponsor. Even the most casual NASCAR fan knows Richard Petty for his autograph, cowboy hat, sunglasses, and mustache. And many more easily associate the iconic day-glo STP red and Petty blue colors as a natural fit for the 43.

Caught a portion of Speed's NASCAR HOF show about Ol' DW. Obviously, there is a good bit of emphasis on Waltrip's short-track roots at Nashville's fairgrounds speedway.
As a side story, it was great seeing RacersReunion member and speedway historian [ Russ Thompson ] providing some commentary on Waltrip's time at the track from the late 60s thru the early 70s.
Russ also goes by the handle Calhoun98 for some of you who frequent other racing-related message boards, Flickr, YouTube, etc.
Great work Russ.
The King left Chicago with a hand shake agreement with Granatelli. Andy apparently said something about "now if you change your mind about the color..."
Richard said when the paper contract arrived there was a clause in it offering an extra $50,000 or something like that for an all-red car. Richard marked it out, passed on the 50 g's, and continued with the day-glo red and Petty blue combo.
January 19, 1972 - Andy Granatelli hosts a press conference in Chicago to announce a sponsorship by STP of Richard Petty and Buddy Baker. The NASCAR game changed forever. (Interesting that the sponsorship was reported that Andy 'purchased' Petty Enterprises.)
TMC
What a perfect sponsor for this gruesome twosome. Only other one suitable might have been Pampers.
If that 43 could find its way to victory lane at the beach, RPM's sponsorship woes would lessen. The King's long-time sponsor STP would suddenly stand for Short Term Problem as it pertains to cash.
Staley was also driving a Petty ragtop - albeit one owned by Julian Petty.
Holy cow. This is great. The first few seconds show a still photo of the 1957 convertible race. If that is indeed the case, this is a home run for me as a Petty fan. In the 57 rag top race at Richmond, Johnny Dodson drove the white #88 Petty Engineering Oldsmobile. The race was the 1st of seven convertible races Dodson raced for PE - all in 1957 and represented all of his starts in the convertible series. He also made 15 career GN starts - one of which was for the Pettys. Very, very cool.
