Harvick Merges Nationwide Team with Childress

General

I was in the pits/garage Tuesday...and after the interview I saw Bowyer give after the Montoya wreck, his expressions while he stood there when the team was repairing the car, I got the feeling then and there this is a lame duck situation for Clint.

Wendell Scott vs. Willy T. Ribbs - Willy in the News Today

General

Not to mention that when he got to Winston Cup 8 years later, he had Jim Trueman bankrolling him (Trueman was also in charge of Bobby Rahal's CART team at the time that won the 1986 Indy 500.) And he had DiGard R&D equipment (also remember that Greg Sacks had won in the R&D car the previous July at Daytona, trick Gary Nelson engine notwithstanding. Granted, the guy could drive the Trans-Am cars (where he had Roush equipment in those Mustangs), but the bottom line is he couldn't get it done when he was here and decided to blame everyone else. Had he came here looking to perform and not act like he was better than everyone else, he might've worked his way up.

Tim Richmond Won Southern 500 25 Years Ago Today

General

My man Bill Elliott had the race in the bag, was leading, and got into the turn 1 wall with just a couple of laps left. That was pretty heartbreaking for me as a 10 year old fan, because Bill had a rough 1986- 2 wins, both at Michigan. And of course, he won The Winston at Atlanta, but he was the defending champion of the race in '86, had bided his time to get out front...and was running away with it. Still- Richmond had a pretty remarkable run that year- he had a stretch from the Coca-Cola 600 in May...to the fall race in Richmond- where if you threw out a 15th at Michigan, and a 6th at Bristol, he ran first or second in 10 out of the 12 races in that stretch. Reminds me of the run Darrell Waltrip put together in 1981 from Nashville in July thru the Atlanta race that November (13 races) where he finished 1st, 1st, 2nd, 2nd, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 2nd, 1st, 1st, 1st, 1st, 2nd. Not sure outside of Richard Petty's 10 wins in a row streak if there has been a better run of races in Nascar history.

Need help with historical research

Current NASCAR

Jerry-

I have some good news for you on the Atlanta car. This is the logo that was on the back trunk lid for the Atlanta race:

Y-106 FM

Sorry, but that's the best pic I've got for now. Y-106 was a country station here in Atlanta. If you Google Rhubarb Jones, you should find the radio dj that was at the station the longest. On his site, you can email him. He might can help you with some clearer logos of the Y-106 logo.

I will have your races in the mail on Thursday.

Current NASCAR

Jerry-

I am burning copies of both races in the next week or so. I will have a look to see if there's something that I can help you with. But to answer your question- yes, I do have copies of both of them. That Charlotte race was done by Jefferson-Pilot, and the Atlanta race was covered by WTBS.

Current NASCAR

Jerry,

I have the races on DVD, but I can't guarantee how quickly I can go thru and watch them to see if I can spot out anything for you.

Boris & The Biff

General

Sure looked like to me Ragan had the position coming out of 1. Boris should've surrendered the spot, but instead, he recklessly turned the 6 and caused a big mess.

Hard Hits at Watkins Glen

General

Something needs to be done for sure Dave. With the speeds these cars are generating, even in the slower sections of the racetrack, a hit on the guardrail is still a hard hit as compared to Infineon, where the cars are braking to 30-50 MPH through most of the corners, giving the cars less momentum going into and coming out of a corner. I know we've been talking a lot about J.D. McDuffie this weekend, and although they didn't so much as mention the anniversary on the telecast- the hits today should serve as a reminder to the track officials of the sheer danger this track presents to the drivers even now. I cringe to think what the headlines might be this afternoon had safety advances not been made in these cars since 1991.

The Caution King

General

I hate to say this...but Ken Ragan. Seems like every year he broke his neck, back, or something in a crash from about 1984 up until he stopped driving.
