Did you ever see Richard Petty win in person?

I was lucky enough as a kid fresh out of the Army to be able to work for the Petty's for a few months but I was also lucky enough to see several of his wins (including a Myers Brothers Memorial or two) growing up and as a "tire-buster" for Goodyear/Huggins. I really can't add much to the legend as others have documented time and again the wins, crashes, losses and even the "down" side of the "King's" career. But until you have ridden from Daytona Beach to Randleman late at night with the "King" and Dale Inman, both in really dark sunglasses running wide-open in a tow-truck, or ridden around Darlington with "him", Dale and "Yoder" only half-a-second off tire test speeds, well you just haven't lived. I was truly a lucky kid in those days. And as I sit here pecking away on this, just to my left is a trophy my "daddy" won at North Wilkesboro just a few days before he died. That win came in a Petty Oldsmobile convertible. The "king's" first win may have been in the same car.

Prayers sent. Hope he recovers. I really enjoyed hearing his tale about Buddy Baker and the ambulance ride at, I think, Smokey Mountain when Don promoted there. Seems Buddy got his bell rung and when they put the stretcher in the ambulance, they forgot to tie it down. Buddy went out the back door and Naman said he went faster on the stretcher than he did in the race car. I think thats the way I heard the tale.

Too dang funny! Even Junior Miller was a toddler when this was taken. As far as Turner goes, I think that is him "Fish" is tryong to pull off Bobby. Keep em coming.

I added a photo (hope I did it right to be seen on the main page) of a fight at Bowman Gray Stadium from "back in the day". This fight makes the Burton/Gordon & Allison/Yarborough altercations look like childs play. I asked if anyone could name any of the people in the photo and gave a couple of hints. The 20R in the background and the curley haired guy trying to separate the fighters ("Fish Hauser", a long time friend and crew member for Bobby Myers) are a couple of hints. There may also be a couple of NASCAR's finest "officials" captured here as well. Have fun with it!
