November 14, 1971: Richard Petty wins Capital City 500 and his 3rd Title
Stock Car Racing History
I have no recollection of being at this race... but then again, I went to a heck of a lot of Richmond races. I was living/working in Wilson, NC at the time of this event.
I note in the original typed starting lineup for the event that Charlie Glotzbach is shown in the customary #3 Richard Howard/Junior Johnson 1971 Chevy (Monte Carlo) - but, in the race recaps posted at Racing Reference and Ultimate Racing History, Glotzbach is shown in the #98 Richard Howard Chevy, as he is also shown earlier in 1971 at Dover.
For the fall 1971 Charlotte race, Howard had Junior prepare two identical Monte Carlos - the #3 for Glotzbach and the #98 for Cale Yarborough. Cale withdrew because of Indy Car obligations to Firestone tires (Cup was all Goodyear in 1971) and Junior (Howard) replaced him with LeeRoy Yarbrough in the #98 Monte Carlo.
Anybody know how/why the #3 Monte Carlo qualified by Glotzbach at Richmond turned into a #98 Monte Carlo when the race was finally run?
I don't know if this footage has been previously posted at RR, but here is color film of Richard and his #42 winning at Augusta on November 14, 1965 after spirited battles with with Bobby Isaac in the Junior Johnson #26 and Tiny Lund in the #55:
You'll see the red & white #80 with Worth McMillion's brother, Allen making just one of his two career GN starts in the 1964 Pontiac team car to Worth's #83. RR's G.T. Nolen has also driven that car.R.I.P., Donna.
Have fond memories of the nice articles and promotions Donna and the late Paul Rakes did for us at Richmond International Raceway in the 90s, both in the Metro Motorsports Magazine and on the Metro Motorsports television show. They provided true local, grassroots coverage of Richmond racers, race shops, and facilities.
Always remember Donna's beautiful hair.
Thoughts and prayers to the family.
Thank you for posting this, Dennis.
"Ralphie the Racer" led an interesting life! According to this clip he was a former New York tailor!
Photo published in NASCAR Complete History of the January 1948 NASCAR Modified Division exhibition race won by Buddy Shuman on the 1 1/4-mile dirt Pompano Beach Speedway in Florida:
NASCAR pioneer Buddy Shuman poses with one of his Modified stock cars. Shuman won the inaugural NASCAR-sanctioned race in January 1948 at Pompano Beach, Florida. It was a non-points race, so credit for the firstofficial race is given to the Daytona Beach Speed Week event that February, won by Red Byron.
Here's a link to a very interesting writeup of the #91 Chevelle sponsored out of Liberty, NC by both Cannaday Chevrolet and a local lumber company and fielded by Junior Fields and Ralph McNabb for a variety of drivers in the 1971 Winston Cup season, beginning with Charlie Glotzbach at the April 1971 N. Wilkesboro event:

Dennis... I found this interesting passage in The Danville (Va.) Bee:
Apr. 21, 1971 'Mr. Modified' Joins Virginia 500 Field
MARTINSVILLE--Take Ray Hendrick, put him in a fast Chevrolet and what do you have? Hopefully, a lot of excitement for the fans in Sunday's $32,680, 16th annual Virginia 500 race at Martinsville Speedway. The Richmond speedster who is becoming known as "Mister Modified," will drive a 1971 Chevelle in the Winston Cup event that covers 500 laps and 262.5 miles. The car, just recently built, was prepared by Junior Fields and R a l p h McNabb and is sponsored by Cannaday Chevrolet of Liberty N.C.
The results don't show Hendrick in that Cup field.
