Racing History Minute - November 3, 1963

Stock Car Racing History

It has just occurred to me that this race "might" have historical significance to one of our frequent RR contributors.

Starting 18th and finishing 35th in his only career NASCAR start was accomplished road racer, Augie Pabst . Pabst was a former vice-president of the Pabst Brewing Company who left the beer business as a young man in the 1950s to concentrate on auto racing.

Around 1999, Pabst Brewing acquired a beer brand favored by a group of nomadic NASCAR devotees who have this ring of honor deal, etc. They can be spotted at the track wearing yellow shirts.

I only mention this stretched connection to the Schaefer Beer brand in case one of those devotees happens to read this particular post.

Augie Pabst can be seen in the photo below from Dave Westerman's Florida Stock Cars site wheeling a 1964 Holman-Moody-built Ford to a USAC road course win.

Augie Pabst in winners circle. From Augie Pabst collection published by Forza.

The link below will take you to a very interesting story about the young fellow who actually drove for a competing beer brand out of Chicago.

Racing History Minute - November 3, 1963

Stock Car Racing History

Thanks for this most interesting post, Tim. I had completely forgotten about the USAC drivers being forced to withdraw from this race AFTER they'd already qualified.

I went to Riverside from January 1981 until it closed and had many really enjoyable moments, especially meeting the west coast fans and drivers. Those fans came down from Washington State and Oregon, from all over California, Nevada and Arizona to see big time NASCAR racing.

It was really eye opening to learn how knowledgable those west coast fans were and how good "their" drivers were.

Oh... I also ate my first burrito at Riverside, at the concession stand just outside the garage gate.

There are very few men that can say they made as big of an impact in the sport of NASCAR as much as Dale Earnhardt Sr. He was without a doubt one of the greatest drivers of all time. Claiming 7 championships, and 76 career victories, The Intimidator ruled NASCAR in his day. Even though he was taken from us way to soon, his mark on the sport is undeniable.

Very rarely do you see one of Seniors rides that he actually piloted arrive at auction, but thats exactly what we have with this 1977 Chevy Nova.

Originally built as a Pontiac Ventura by Dale Earnhardts father-in-law master body worker Robert Gee, the Ventura became a Nova after Dale Sr. discovered that the Chevy Nova drafted better. Even still, with his familiar Wrangler Jeans colors Dale won multiple events at Caraway, Daytona, Rockingham and Charlotte with this vehicle as a Ventura in 82 and 83.

Between the 85 and 86 seasons, with the help of a ball-peen hammer and a hacksaw, Dale Sr. himself and Robert Gee Jr. took to the Ventura Nose, quarter windows, hood, grill, and bumper, and before long the car was ready for the 86 opener at Daytona as a Nova. They also changed the number to the #8 made famous by Dales father Ralph Earnhardt. This Nova would also mark the first time that Earnhardt would feature his familiar GM Goodwrench colors.

At the 1986 Goodys 300 at Daytona International Speedway, Dale qualified ninth at the season opener. However, he made a late charge and passed Morgan Sheppard with only two laps left to claim the victory. It was the first of five victories for Dale in 1986.

Since racing in the NASCAR Grand National division the Nova has still seen plenty of track time. The vehicle has been driven in historic stock car events since 1998. It has been invited multiple times to the world famous Goodwood Festival of Speed in England. Most recently in 2009, which was the Celebration of NASCAR-Daytonas 50th Anniversary where Gene Felton and crew were the class winners behind the wheel of Seniors Nova.

In 2012, the car underwent a complete mechanical and paint restoration in preparation for racing in the invitation only Rolex Monterey Historics at Laguna Seca. Completed by Gene Felton Restorations, the car now features a NASCAR 358 Chevy, a period MSD Ignition system, glass windshield, and even comes with a drivers seat that Dale Sr. himself sat in.

This Nova is extremely well documented and comes with a certificate of authenticity from one of Dales original volunteer crew, Mike Herman Sr. Dont miss your chance to own this legitimate Dale Earnhardt car that he not only worked on, but drove to victory multiple times. Sold on a Bill of Sale.

Anticipated Sale Price: $175,000.00 to $250,000.00

THIS VEHICLE IS AVAILABLE EXCLUSIVELY THROUGH OUR CHARLOTTE AUCTION, OCTOBER 31 ST - NOVEMBER 3 RD . TO BID, PLEASE REGISTER AT THE RKM COLLECTOR CAR WEBSITE OR CALL 704.235.0746 FOR MORE DETAILS.

Remember Wrestler Andre the Giant Living in Ellerbe and Frequenting Rockingham Races?

Stock Car Racing History

Interesting you should mention Dusty Rhodes. I spent about 1 1/2 years working out of an office in a residence just off Sardis Road in Charlotte 1987-part of 1988. Dusty was living just around the corner at the time "wrestling" for Crockett Promotions.

Remember Wrestler Andre the Giant Living in Ellerbe and Frequenting Rockingham Races?

Stock Car Racing History

There was a sad story in the Raleigh, NC paper this week, picked up by Associated Press. The story said that the late professional wrestler, Andre the Giant's former residence in Ellerbe, North Carolina, near the now named Rockingham Speedway, would be auctioned off this morning - Saturday, November 2, 2013.

Here is the link to the story with full info, including color pictures of Andre and friends such as Hulk Hogan at home in Ellerbe having fun. I encourage you to click on it and see a lot of info. R.I.P. Andre:

http://www.newsobserver.com/2013/10/31/3330392/giant-wrestlers-home-on-auction.html

I mention this sad event because after he moved to Ellerbe, Andre would always come to the races at North Carolina Motor Speedway, where he was a towering presence roaming the green grassy space between pit road and the start/finish line during pre-race activities shaking hands and patting folks on the back. A friendly sort who indulged in a case of beer and three bottles of wine daily, Andre's hand shake swallowed the hands of all comers.

For the 1979 American 500, the track named Andre its Grand Marshal. Here's coverage of that announcement in The Robesonian :

Racing History Minute - November 2, 1969

Stock Car Racing History

The unknown to me driver name in this field is 26th finishing Mack Sellers , who Racing Reference lists as being born in Spartanburg and driving in just three career Grand National races - all in 1969 - at Jeffco; Thompson, Connecticut and Augusta, Georgia.

The same source lists 7 other drivers making 22 starts for Mack Sellers in 1969 and 1970. Those drivers were Roy Mayne, Roy Tyner, Dick Poling, George Davis, Buster Sexton, Bobby Boyles and John Jennings.

The photo below was posted by member, Guitarzan on the Randy Ayers Modeling site and purports to show John Jennings of Fayetteville, NC in the #82 Ford fielded by Mack Sellers at an unknown 1970 venue:

Anybody know anything about Mack Sellers and his brief fling at NASCAR Grand National racing 1969-1970 as a driver and car owner?

Would the Tweens, Twerps, Twerks, Twits and other Young Social Media Types Watch These Trucks???

Stock Car Racing History

NASCAR is constantly bombarding us with its "Action Plans" to capture its "percieved" desired demographic group, which appears to be an 18 year old with some type electronic device lodged in his ear (in my day it was a transistor radio).

The current NASCAR Camping World Truck Series doesn't seem to be generating a lot of excitement other than producing some really good drivers of youth, color and talent, as well as pretty good name calling.

I was reminded when I made a photo post of a 1985 Ford racing ad of another truck series - NOT sponsored by NASCAR.

In 1985, while Motorsports coordinator for The Southland Corporation in Dallas, Texas and its 7-Eleven, CITGO and Chief Auto Parts brands, one of the 13 drivers I was sponsoring (not counting unlimited hydroplanes) was Jeff Huber in the Grand National Sport Truck class of Mickey Thompson Stadium Truck Series.

You didn't need a big Texas Motor Speedway type multi-million dollar complex to run these trucks. Just find any old ballpark or fairgrounds and build a few "whoop-de-doops" and you're all set to go.

Here's a very brief clip of our 7-Eleven driver, Jeff Huber doing a 360 spin at the Orange Show Speedway, California and recovering to win the race!

Did I mention that these drivers ran on both DIRT and ASPHALT on the same course??!!

It might not not capture the attention of today's youngsters, but you gotta admit that the action was non-stop as my 7-Eleven Ford Truck entry persevered and held off the Asian brigade.

Of course, it was a different day. The 7-Eleven brand today is owned by the Asian brigade.

18th place, Cotton Farmer was also an interesting name. Do you if any other Farmer name variations competed in NASCAR, such as Tobacco Farmer, Corn Farmer, Hog Farmer, etc.?? Red Farmer raced out of Alabama and Snookie Farmer out of Richmond, but those weren't cash crops.

The race also featured Crawfish Crider and Possum Jones, two wonderful nicknames. "Wild Indian" Roy Tyner placed 13th and "Soapy" Castles 10th. Tiny was 8th.

I also see a Squirrel in the field!

We could use some good nicknames in today's NASCAR. Maybe Kevin Harvick will oblige and give a couple to the Dillon brothers!
