NASCAR Messed With What 40 Years Ago on July 4th???

Stock Car Racing History

40 years ago, beginning with the 1973 July 4th Firecracker 400 at Daytona, NASCAR restricted carburetors. It all came to a head at Charlotte in October. If you thought things were interesting at Charlotte in October 1983 when Richard Petty was busted in Victory Lane, wait until you read what happened during and following the 1973 National 500, ten years earlier.

One top team pulled out mid-race and refused to let NASCAR inspect their car. There were protests following the event and counter protests. An eyewitness crewman for another team claimed he saw the Pettys cheating on their carburetor. His team had already had their pole winning qualifying time disallowed because of a cheater carburetor plate.

Charlotte promoter Richard Howard promised fans that NASCAR would let him know the official race results by 10:00 a.m on Monday morning following the Sunday Charlotte race.

Let it be stated that the NASCAR records 40 years later show the top 3, all involved in the protests and tear downs, as Cale, Richard and Bobby. Still special to be able to set a race finish 40 years later using just first names isn't it?

Dogs ... err, DRIVERS Playing Poker

Stock Car Racing History

I saw many of those poker games in hospitality rooms I sponsored or visited. The games I saw always included Barney and Bud.

Interesting side note... back in those days, whenever Richmond promoter Paul Sawyer stopped by Vegas on our Riverside trips, Bill France, Jr. always gave him $5,000 to play 21. Paul always returned more than $5,000 to Bill, Jr. Whether he actually won as he said or whether he was bribing Daytona I don't know.

Racing History Minute - June 27, 1959

Stock Car Racing History

There sure were a lot of wonderful and great races before I ever saw one. Thanks, Tim for taking us back for another history lesson. It's especially meaningful when the story involves one of our own folks like Rex.

Stock Car Racing History

The High Point Speedway sounds pretty amazing for its day, what with the two way tunnel under the track, etc. I hope Bill is successful in his efforts to get the historical markers. Not too many folks can say they had family members who were racers and family members who were promoters like Bill's family.

Glad you found the article about Bill, Chase.

Stock Car Racing History

Chase, according to the story in the Lexington Dispatch, the track had been inactive for nearly two years before the November 1954 race (which was a 1955 season points event) and reopened for the race above with totally new management and a better track. Story link below:

A lap around Daytona with Fonty Flock

Stock Car Racing History

Chase, that is a good piece. I didn't know that Fonty had been "Membership Director" for NASCAR. Very interesting considering the status of Tim.

This ad below was on the same page with the story Chase linked. I'd like one of the $7 tickets, please!
