No Jet Dryer - Montoya Takes Daytona
General
and, in F-1:
- With 24 wins in 51 Grand Prix starts, Juan Manuel Fangio has the best winning percentage, 47.06 in the sports history.
and, in F-1:
Above - Jimmy Clark of Scotland during Rockingham's 1967 American 500 - his only NASCAR start. In 2009, the Times of London named Clark the greatest driver in history. I had 8mm color film of Jimmy at this race until it was "destroyed in a fire" by NASCAR's contractor preparing clips for NASCAR's 1998 50th Anniversary celebration. The Wood Brothers pitted Jimmy and his Lotus when he won the 1965 Indianapolis 500.
Though JP gets all the Cup PR at Ganassi, his teammate, Jamie McMurray has 3 times as many Cup wins (6) and a winning percentage of 1.6% compared to JP's less than 1%.
I love watching other forms of racing. Few from other venues have ever been successful in Cup. I was fortunate to see the great Jim Clark make his only Cup start (at Rockingham for Holman-Moody). Many still consider him to be the greatest ever.
I wish I could have seen Juan Manuel Fangio.
He looked good today at Daytona. Does he look good in Cup? Rarely.
Just as a comparison and contrast, Tony Stewart has won 9% of his 500 Cup starts.
Bill Elliott has won 5% of his Cup starts
Darrell Waltrip won 10.4% of his Cup starts
Dale Earnhardt won 11.2% of his Cup starts.
Jeff Gordon 12.6%.
Cale Yarborough 14.8%
Jimmie Johnson 15%
Junior Johnson 15.9%
Fireball Roberts 16%
Richard Petty 16.9%
David Pearson 18%
Tim Flock 20.9%
Well let's see....
In 7 COMPLETE seasons of Cup racing, Mr. Montoya has started 217 races, won two, and run over a jet dryer.
His winning percentage is .0092%. Call me when he gets to 1% in Cup please!
Juan Pablo Montoya had no jet dryer to contend with today and brought home the winning Ganassi/Sabates ride for the Daytona Rolex 24 overall win.
Scott Pruett - co-driver ties Hurley Haywood with 5 overall Daytona 24 Hour wins.

It's always upsets me that Joe Weatherly's name was taken off the museum at Darlington after ISC purchased the operation. Revealing to read of the Pearson/Wood Bros. car being taken out.
I flew out to Riverside from Greensboro, NC, Dallas, TX and Greenville-Spartanburg, SC. Depending on what flights I could get, sometimes I flew into Los Angeles (LAX) and sometimes into the small Ontario, CA airport. To get to Riverside from the Ontario airport, you had to pass by the remains of the Ontario Speedway main grandstand. That was always a heart breaker. Now, of course, Riverside, too, has gone the way of Ontario and Fontana can't draw flies for its races.
After one Riverside race a couple of us went to the Ontario airport on Monday morning to turn in our rental car for our flight back to the east coast. Before we turned in the car, we talked ourself into changing our flight, kept the rental car and drove the Pacific Coast Highway from L.A. to San Francisco. Ate some crab meat and sour dough bread chased with a long neck at Fisherman's Wharf, then caught a late night flight out of San Francisco International. What we did in our 30s my body would never tolerate in my 60s, lol!
