July 2 - This day in Petty history 1992 - On Richard Petty's birthday and on qualifying day for his final race at Daytona, Sterling Marlin in Junior Johnson's Maxwell House Ford knocked the King off the pole. He jokingly said he might need a bullet proof vest to protect himself.
