Protest

Cale Yarborough continued his winning ways and won the 1968 Virginia 500 at Martinsville in a Mercury followed by David Pearson, Donnie Allison and Lee Roy Yarbrough - all in Fords - and Tiger Tom Pistone in another Mercury. Little Bud Moore in a Dodge was sixth and the first car to the finish not powered by a blue oval engine.

Total Ford domination, right? Well not quite, you see Richard Petty led 248 laps before falling out with rear end trouble and was protested after the race. That's right, he did not finish, but was still protested.

Who made the protest and what was the result?

In fact, Richard was awarded 14th or 15th place as I recall and actually received a bigger payout then anyone who DIDNT finish in the top 3 positions... Now thats leading a bunch of laps... Go Fords...lol

What I found interesting was John Holman never commented on what he was looking for. Now I got to change these things up a little, PKL is making this too easy. I thought when I posted it that you or Dave would answer, both of you are Goggle Masters :)

And that's right Bill, many a time the guy that lead the most laps but did not finish took home more money than most finishers. Only 16 cars finished that day so Richard's finishing position shows how hooked up he was that day.

Now you are just trying to make me feel bad. Not only did I make it easy, I got it wrong LOL. The article I saw had it as 248, anyway he led a lot :) This is where I wish I knew how to put up one of those smiley faces that is winking at you.

OK, I'll chime in.

Do you remember 2nd place Pearson protesting the flagged winner Petty immediately following the conclusion of the 1971 Virginia 500?

Petty had no gas cap on his car the final 18 laps.

The decision on the protest was rendered by one of my favorite folks in racing, Lin Kuchler, who was back with the AMA (American Motorcyclist Association) and his motorcycle history museum by the time I met him.

Read about Lin Kuchler's ruling on Pearson's protest of Petty here at this link:

Actually Johnny, What I'm saying is he won more money in 15th place than 4th thru 14th won.

I'm setting here looking at a payout slip from Aug 18th, 1963 at West Va. Int. Speedway where 20th place paid more than 14th thru 19th and ran 182 laps LESS than 14th place. Might be cause it was Jr. Johnson. Maybe he had a special deal...lol
