Ya never know where that road will lead to?

This past week I had spend a wonderful time with my wife Julie at the beach. It was our first time alone for a prolonged period of time for the first time in nearly 20 years after raising our son. We lounged at the beach, caught a show, hung by the pool, slept a lot and ate a lot. Until, we got tired of hanging out at the beach and took a little road trip over to Pawley's Island, SC. We had no direction, just driving along and whenever we saw something interesting we'd stop. Well, Julie got out her smart phone and looked for a place that sells crafts, and up pops some crafts store off the beaten path, back among trailer houses and dirt driveways. There we were gazing at handmade crafts, Julie looking for something special, me, I was just wandering around (waiting patiently). Here's where things get interesting...as we were driving away I spotted a split-window coupe in the back of some big warehouse and decided to turn around to investigate. As we pulled in the driveway I spotted some guy cutting some boards and ask if I could speak to someone about the old car out back. He said "Everyone's at lunch" (in broken English). So I decided to call the search off and text Bobby Williamson to tell him "There's some old cars over here" and we left. Later we were close to the location of the old split-window coupe so I asked Julie if I could go over one more time to see if the owner was back from lunch, she agreed, so off I went.

Sure enough, the bay doors were open and I could see some old pickups and cars inside with a few more out back. As I walked in the bay door the first thing I spot is a 1939 Ford Coupe MODIFIED DIRT CAR!!! HOLY FLATHEADS BATMAN!!! Up on a hoist sits this traditionally built 39' Ford coupe. I ask a worker about the car and he said "It belonged to Archie Downs". ARCHIE DOWNS!!! He's a LEGEND! I spoke with Archie years ago when I bought my first old modified, can this be for real? A while later the owner shows up and we introduce and start talking cars. A real down to earth gentlemen he was, showed lots of interest in our conversation and took me on a tour of his shop (quite a collection I might add). I told him all about my racing venture with the Bell & Bell Vintage Modified Series, and how fun it is to race these old modifieds. It was the most unlikely places I would have gone, no where near our destination, just riding some back road and happened to see a split-window coupe (old 30's Ford) and the next thing I knew I was engaged in conversation with a guy that just might change his mind of turning the old Archie Downs Ford into a street rod, and instead, fix it up and race it someday. Goes to show, you never know where the "track" of life takes you.

On another note; I just got a text from an friend that use to be one of my soldiers back in the 82nd Airborne Division, Chad York, now the Race Director for rookie driver Bill Catania #18 ARCA race team making his first start in the ARCA series at Berlin Raceway in Marne, Michigan tonight. I hope I had a little influence on Chad, at least with his new Race Director career. Again, I never expected that text.

What are the chances of these two events? Luck? Fate? I've always said, Luck is when preparation and opportunity meet. Then again, some things are just meant to be. Also, it's not what we don't do in life, it's what we do that makes a difference. Take a chance, take a risk, take a turn down an old beaten path and you'll never know what you'll find there until you do it.

Fantastic story and experience.

This is a better and timeless model to follow vs. the guidance offered by Yogi Berra who said:

When you come to a fork in the road ... take it.

There are many roads less traveled this day and time. If you go back to your upbringing these roads were instilled into you,but only they become apparent if you use what was taught to you by your piers.

In racing you learn at a young age, true you may be any age but when the dust is inhaled the bug is in you. Jim only smelled a whiff out on that road less traveled. You never learn much traveling the same road daily. But if you follow the less traveled road you just may find a true meaning in your future. An old saying : that bump in the road may have been there for a reason. --------------------------------------------------- memories

Awesome story Jim. I sometimes wander off the beaten path but I've never made a discovery like that one!

What a change! It's been awhile since I've checked in and I'm quite surprised. It may take me awhile to figure it our but first look it's really great.

That is why...I always do the driving, Jim. I will take the less traveled road anytime. My friends and family have always said..I never go and come the same way. That is true...just a wanderer, and you never know who or what you might run up on. SO glad you and Julie took some time together....I am sure you found many jewels...in this time together. ~Patsy~

Thanks Patsy, it was time well spent. Racing had overwhelmed my relations with my family the past few years, this year I've devoted my time and energy to them and it has been rewarding beyond expectations. I've missed racing a lot but, nothing can replace my family. Besides, I've gotten more accomplished around the house in the last 6 months than I have in the last six years. ToINCLUDEworking on the car and gettingready to build a shed to house it.

Dave, that's not a bad start for the first time. Of course it's no testimony to the super speedways but hey, he finished, a few laps down, but he finished. His Race Director, Chad York was a Specialist (E-4) in my last platoon in the army before I retired. Chad was a young ambitious lad, always respectful, always helpful, but not a butt kisser by no means, he did his job without looking for praise. I'm very happy that we've kept in touch, as have many of my soldiers and peers, Chad will be a great director for the team. When I got the text last night it read, and quote: "Hey Buddy, I'm here in your old stomping grounds, Berlin Raceway as Race Director for an ARCA team." I'm thinking, "ya right" but sure enough, there's ol' York having the time of his life. He knows how much I enjoy racing, I'm sure he's a little pleased that I'm pleased...ya see, those boys were like sons to me, accept I had to put them in harms way if called so you had to separate your feelings and replace it with trust and obedience. Chad and my whole platoon left for Iraq and Afganastan shortly after my retirement, I nearly stayed in long enough to take them myself but it just wasn't the plan. Besides, I was replaced by a very competent NCO, I felt much better about exiting the Army knowing they'd be in good hands.
