MODEL CITY GT 100

Kingsport, Tn. June 4, 1968

The 6 th Grand Touring race of 1968 was held at Kingsport Speedway and was scheduled for 267 laps on the 3/8 mile dirt oval. Qualifying was rained out so the starting order was set by random draw with Ernie Shaw drawing the pole position. Donnie Allison and Tiny Lund refused to race because of track conditions. A crowd of 4,000 saw two time Grand National Champion Buck Baker out front by 6 laps when the race was stopped at 185 laps because of a midnight curfew. The win netted Buck $1,000.00 and the point lead as Tiny dropped to 5 th in the standings.

The race was the first on the track's 3/8 mile configuration after having been enlarged from a 1/4 track. The local Hawkins County Post newspaper ran several small features about the Grand (Re)Opening - including some of the expected entrants.
