GT 200

Richmond, Va. June 19, 1968

The 7 th Grand Touring race of 1968 was held at Richmond International Raceway and was 200 laps on the 1/2 mile dirt oval. Buck Baker put his Camaro on the pole but lost and engine and did not finish the race but maintained his point lead. Donnie Allison got his first Grand Touring win driving his Warren Prout prepared Mustang to a one lap victory over Jim Vandiver in a Camaro. Little Bud Moore lost an engine in his Cougar and did not finish.

This was the first GT race attended by my buddy Frank and me. I still remember that Mini Cooper driving through the dirt turns at Richmond while all the other cars were sliding.

Dennis, it just occurred to me that the June 19, 1968 GT 200 was "probably" and "most likely" the last race ever run on the Richmond dirt layout before it was paved for the September 8, 1968 Capital City 300.

You are probably right Dave. As I recall there were several times in the GT/GA era that they were the first to run on a newly paved surface or the last to run on dirt.
