Richard Petty won three times on September 10. Two of them were 1965 at Hickory and 1967 at Richmond. But the third one was the most spectacular of the three - the 1972 Capital City 500 at Richmond.

1972 - Richard wins the Capital City 500 at Richmond Fairgrounds Speedway to earn his 146th career win. He had to do it the hard way by waging a tough battle with Bobby Allison all day. And as Petty was leading, Buddy Baker got into the back of the 43. The King's STP Plymouth rode the guardrail for a while, popped off, never lost the lead, and went on to win the race.

I was there at Richmond and watched Richard in the air on the guardrail in 1972. He never missed a beat. I saw both and that feat easily surpasses the "Pass in the Grass", just didn't have the video and national media coverage. My buddy, Frank and I are on the very top row of the bleacher grandstand in the photo you posted.
