What ever happened to going back to the previous lap when a caution was needed? Think of it,no reason to throw caution to the wind because you knew you were going back to where you were before the "Uh-Oh".That means the position you were in when you were scored the lap before. This was the way we ran, no reason to get carried away, heck you could slow down when the caution lights were blinking. That way was a safest way I can remember. Now its Hamburger down so you be scored as far up as possible WHEN the caution flag is thrown, Kinda scary if you really think about it. My opinion but it worked.
Johnny, racing back to the finish line is barbaric, and this is the only series, to my knowledge, that ever did that. Yeah, I know...it was tradition...but it was a bad one.
BUT...so is this ridiculous idea of trying to "freeze" the field. Unless they can come up with a photographic system that will give them an undisputed, across-the-track picture of every inch of every track, then they should simply revert to what other civilized racing venues do...revert to the leader at the end of the previous lap.
Then, if they want to play green/white/checker all night, it's OK by me, but calling a winner by some unseen and probably mythical "loop" has never set well with this old race fan. Believe it or not, NASCAR has been known to lie from time to time, and I see no reason to trust them when they tell me there are "loops" out there that decides who wins a race. Lending credence to my disbelief is the fact that no one had ever heard of the dang things before the first time this problem arose...right after they decreed that they would no longer race back to the flag.
I wrote a piece back then entitled, "Tomatoes and Fields Should Not be Frozen." Remind me to look it up for you.
I dont guess I spelled it right --- What I was Asking was WHY did they take this old but proven way of safety away
It had something to do with Dale Jarrett at Louden in 2000 I think.
