After seeing the post of our member Ray Lamm being a guest host on Joe Kelly's Richmond radio show this week I looked at Joe's "Let's Talk Racing" Facebook page to see what he might have new. Joe, you may remember is the gentleman who got me a copy of the rare 1951 recording of "Racing at Royall Speedway." Joe is a treasure who I'd love to see Bopper and Jeff have on Racing Through History sometime. Joe announced at many tracks, some long forgotten, promoted Southside Speedway and raced motorcycles at Occoneechee. Well, as usual, I wasn't disappointed in what Joe had posted. Right there was a rare story photocopied from the September 1952 Speed Age chronicling what may have been the first attempt to shoot motion picture footage inside a moving stock car during an actual race. Again, the story takes place at Richmond's Royall Speedway (today's Southside Speedway) in the Summer of 1952 during a Richmond Stock Car Racing Association feature. Captain William Clark is shooting 16mm footage from inside Runt Harris' #90 Junie Donlavey modified with both a stationary mounted camera and a handheld motion picture camera. The story details wrecks by Emanuel Zervakis and Ray Hendrick, both in Tadlock Smiley's Auto Sales cars, with Buck Mason (of the Crazy Joe Maphis song) sweeping by three wrecked cars at the end to win. I don't know if any of this will post or not, but it is absolutely fascinating. If you can read the following all the credit goes to Joe Kelly in Richmond. I apologize in advance for the 4 pages being out of sequence due to my posting difficulties.
