It's Mother's Day, and as all race fans surely know by now.............that means ONE thing!! THE SOUTHERN 500 (on Saturday night, on what NASCAR once thought the most likely-to-fail-date since theslow exectuion of Rockingham).Yup, that's Riiiiight.........it's the "new" Sourthern 500,
Gentlemen, start your older-than-dirtstories of the minnow-pond.
But, why do some short tracks close on this weekend and usually on the Bristol weekend? And, interestingly, most of the tracks that close are asphalt. What's that all about? Do they feel some sort of obligation to support the Frances? If the local track bucks the trend and RACES against NASCAR, the fans may be sparse onthose 'Cup Saturday nights, butbyclosing, the fan count is a guaranteed ZERO. Local tracks a'int the pinnacle of prosperity, anyway. Closing a'int helping nothing. Fans once were seamless, but the dirt community is a different breed than ther distantly-related pavement brethren. The dirt community has long since moved on from NASCAR, and a'int really in to Jimmy and Jeffy and JUNIOR.What a blessing in times like these.
Anyway, (dirt)Carolina Speedway in LakeView, SC is racing this Saturday night. LakeView is 41 miles from Darlington.
