A race crewmember fell to his death from a tractor-trailer Friday at Southern National Motorsports Park near Lucama, sheriffs deputies said.
The 59-year-old man was unloading a car from the trailer when he fell, according to Chief of Staff Wanda Samuel, spokeswoman for the Wilson County Sheriffs Office. Deputies didnt release his name late Friday because relatives had not been notified.
"He was on the top lift with the car and evidently lost his footing, said Dale Moore, the tracks general manager. "He fell straight to the asphalt.
Sheriffs office cars lined the apron of the track around 4:30 p.m. Moore said Wilson County Emergency Medical Services paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene.
"We at Southern National Motorsports Park are saddened to report a member of our racing family was in a tragic accident this afternoon while unloading a car with his racing team in a sport he dearly loved, Moore said in a statement. "The owners, staff and all racing teams at Southern National Motorsports Park would like to send our prayers and our deepest sympathy to his family. Friday practice has been canceled, and we will be paying tribute to him and his team at tomorrow nights race.
Samuel said the crewmember is from Troy, a small town in Montgomery County bordering the Uwharrie National Forest. Moore added that the mans race team is based in Winston-Salem.
Crews were unloading their cars Friday afternoon to run practice laps for Saturdays Pro All-Stars Series race. PASS drivers compete in regional circuits behind the wheels of late-model stock cars.
Southern National Motorsports Park is a NASCAR-affiliated four-tenths-of-a-mile asphalt oval located in rural Wilson County between Lucama and Kenly. Owners Michael Diaz and Jerry Brown reopened the track in February 2012.
The Wilson County racetrack is part of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series, a network of nearly 60 North American short tracks. Drivers compete in NASCAR-sanctioned races and can earn points to win state and national championships.
Like minor-league baseball, the circuit allows drivers to hone their skills in hopes of advancing to one of the sports upper echelons the Sprint Cup, Camping World Truck Series and Nationwide Series.
