Dennis, great stuff! Was Champion Raceway a stadium like Victory, or Bowman Gray? Or was it built specifically for racing? I'm having trouble finding photos.

It was a High Banked 1/3 mile built for stock car racing.

Jim,

Dad said he was there that day to with his uncle. He said that some of the fans got unruly and Herb had to have a police escort to get out of the track. You remember that?

Great find, Dennis! that's the most info I've ever seen on the old Champion Speedway. Thanks for sharing.

Herb did not pull his car to the track. He drove it there from Sanford.

That little 265 cubic inch was so strong he was able to handle all the other cars with ease.

He got out of the track ASAP.

The Ford people were upset.

Great post a lot of drivers names that you don't hear any more and one that was still racing last year in the St. Petersburg Fla. area Ralph Ligouri and still very competitive.
