Mudflaps and rock guards for not only the radiator but windshield -- The number 42 , must have been Lee Petty trying a new wrinkle.. Was it required ???? or a personal preference

That pic is from the inaugural World 600 in 1960. The newly christened Charlotte Motor Speedway built by Curtis Turner and Bruton Smith was hardly ready for prime time. The pavement was chunking badly. All 3 Petty cars ran the screens to help protect their cars as you say - and their heads!
Here is another pic of Lee racing alongside teammate Bobby Johns.
And here is Richard racing alongside Jack Smith.
As it turns out, the Petty Plan was for naught. Both Lee and Richard were DQd by NASCAR along with Bob Welborn, Junior Johnson, Paul Lewis, and Lennie Page for accessing pit road inappropriately or something like that. Bobby Johns was not DQd and salvaged a 3rd place finish for the team.
Johnny,
I was not there at the first race at Charlotte in 1960but I think I've read that NASCAR mandated the mud flaps but the teams came up with their own devices on the front to deal with the green asphalt coming up.
well any way you look at it the hen house was short on chicken wire this weekend
Johnny's comment...prompted me to come and read this! LOL!! The track was really that bad, huh?
You always come up with something to make me smile... My Dear Man! Thank you...I needed that one..
bad enough that Lee Petty put mud flaps on his cars
