NORRIS FRIEL MEMORIAL 300

Beltsville, Md. June 20, 1969

The 11th Grand Touring race of 1969 was held at Beltsville Speedway and was 300 laps on the 1/2 mile paved oval. The event was the inaugural Memorial race in memory of Norris Friel. Norris was NASCAR Chief Technical Inspector from 1956 until his death in 1966. Originally scheduled for the 16 th it was postponed due to rain and ran on the 20 th before 8,854 fans.

T.C. Hunt qualified on the pole with a time of 22.10 seconds and led the first 5 laps until Pete Hamilton took over the lead thru lap 16. Hunt went back out front until he was passed by Hamilton on the 54 th lap and led the rest of the way to capture his third win of 1969 by a 3 lap margin over Wayne Andrews who held a 3 lap advantage over third place finisher Buck Baker. There were only 3 cautions for 22 laps.

Fourth place finisher Tiny Lund made his first appearance for his new sponsor PEPSI-COLA. It was the same car he had been driving but now sported a new 1969 Cougar body and new paint scheme.
