GRAND AMERICAN 100

South Boston, Virginia

Saturday, July 11, 1970

Grand American race #18 of 1970 was held at South Boston Speedway, the second trip to the 3/8 mile paved oval. Max Berrier was back in the #16 American Performance Center Javelin after turning it over to Bobby Allison on the road course at Daytona and put it on the pole with a time of 15.65 seconds. Berrier lead the first 104 laps before Tiny Lund got the lead and held it the rest of the way to claim his 14 th win of 1970 in his Ronnie Hopkins prepared Camaro. Lund garnered $1,500 of the $8,760 purse.

Twenty six cars took the green and 17 were running at the finish. There was only one caution for 8 laps. Ken Rush lost a little ground to Lund and Andrews in the points race but held on to second with Lund first and Andrews third.

Dennis, I had hoped to see if I could find a pre and/or post race report for this Grand American race in the fold3 newspaper archives for the South Boston Gazette-Virginian. Unfortunately, the final archived edition was the June 30, 1970 issue, 11 days before the Grand American race. The only racing coverage in that edition was a preview of the July 4, 1970 upcoming Late Model Sportsman race at South Boston:

Found a couple of brief AP wire reports about the race. Not a lot of details. But hey, readers DID get a bit of backgammon trivia in addition to the race results.

From the Niagara Falls Gazette

From Schenectady Gazette

The Virgin Islands Daily News ran a brief AP preview piece on the South Boston GA race, even if it did appear several days after the event! Guess they were slowing down and running on Island Time!

Great find Dave, SoBo regular Pee Wee Wentz was also a regular on the Grand American Series.
