Grand American race #23 of 1970 was held at International Raceway Park a 7/16 mile paved oval. It was the fifth of a 5 event STP Northern Tour after a 530 mile trip from Flemington on Tuesday and the second visit to Ona in 1970. Starting line ups were determined by qualifying heats won by Tiny Lund and Gary Myers.
Tiny Lund led all but 6 laps to record his 16 th win of 1970 with Buck Baker second.
Lund earned $1,400 of the $8,455 purse. Of note on the purses for the Tour events was how the funds were distributed. The payout did not drop off as fast as you went down the order. No finisher got less than $200.
Twenty three cars took the green and there were 7 cautions for 54 laps.

Not knowing how the points were calculated I cant say for sure who won the STP Northern Tour but a good bet would be Buck Baker as he had 2 wins, a second, a fourth and a 6 th place finish for an average finish of 2.8. No one who made all the tour events came close to that mark. Thirty nine different drivers took part in the tour with 17 running all 5 races. Just based on average finishing position alone the top 10 would have been:
1. Buck Baker 2.8
2. Max Berrier 6.4
3. Jimmy Vaughn 7.4
4. Jim Paschal 9.0
5. Phil Wills 9.2
6. Tiny Lund 9.4
7. Wayne Andrews 10.2
8. Doug Aldridge 11.4
9. Richard Childress 12.0
10. Ernie Shaw 13.6
