Grand American race #24 of 1970 was held at the New Asheville Speedway a 1/3 mile paved oval. Tiny Lund started on the pole and led the first 4 laps before Jim Paschal moved to the front and built a lap lead when T.C. Hunts blown engine brought out the caution on lap 49. After the restart Lund mounted a challenge to Paschal finally making a move that led to 2 laps of door to door racing. Just as Lund completed the pass Wayne Andrews had the engine let go in Dub Simpsons Cougar bringing out the second caution. It was the second engine failure of the day for Andrews after loosing the engine in his regular ride during practice. On the restart it was Lund, Paschal and Baker until lap 114 when Paschal attempted a pass entering turn two. Contact spun Tiny bringing out caution number 3. Both cars pitted under the yellow but Paschal returned just as the green came back out. By the time he returned to the track after repairing fender damage he was 2 laps down to Baker who was now leading. Right after the restart Lunds car started to cough and sputter until he retired on lap 121 with fuel pump trouble. By now Baker had a 2 lap lead on Paschal who was about to mount a charge. In just 24 green flag laps he caught Baker and made up one of the laps. Baker tried to pick up the pace but in less than 100 laps Paschal caught and passed him again. (After the race it was discovered Baker had a right side tire that was worn all the way to the fabric.) Just one lap after getting back on the lead lap caution #4 came out for a spinning David Boggs. This allowed Paschal to close up to Bakers bumper for the restart. It took 13 laps to get around the determined Baker but Paschal went back to the lead on lap 251 and held it to the end to score his third win of the year in his Warren Prout prepared Javelin with Baker less than a second behind him. Boggs recovered to finish third but was 13 laps behind at the finish.

Paschal took home $1,000 of the $8,000 purse. There were 4 cautions for 21 laps. Only 9 of the 16 starters were running at the finish.

Hey Chase, I thought of including this but did not because dad did not finish second that time. This was the beginning of a bad streak of engine problems. Also the 1970 season seemed to have more third places finishes but I would be the only one to notice that. One correction on the article, the Cougars carried 1968 and 1970 bodies. I have conflicting reports on the winners share of the purse, this article says $1,400. Others say $1,300 and $1,000. Thanks for posting though, the article does help record the history of the series.

DOH! Glanced at points standings vs. race results.

But I did have to laugh at the line "He is domesticated and has some very nice children."

Yeah I thought that was funny too!
