A challenge to RR members

We've got a 60+ thousand photos, a ton of posts and comments, and a handful of videos. Most activity - at least in recent years - has centered around GN and Cup races. Probably rightfully so. Has drawn the most fans and coverage by fans, sponsors, and media.

But there has been a ton of other stock car racing over the decades. USAC, ARCA, IMCA, Late Model Sportsman, NASCAR Short Track Division, local paved and dirt tracks, etc. Would enjoy seeing folks post many more memories, pics, articles, behind-the-scenes stories, etc. about those forms of racing.

Obviously, a lot of those races may not have received a ton of media coverage. But you might be surprised what a lot of old newspapers included. Let me know if there is a particular race you have in mind, and I'll try to dig up something.

Good idea Chase. I just gave Jack Walker about 3 years worth of Southern Motor Racing and Southern Motorsports Journal from 1963 through '66. Hopefully he will use some of that material as you suggest. I'll look around at what I have left around here and see what I might can find.

I'd love to see anything you can dig up on the 1960s - 1970s Bill Bogley Lincoln-Mercury Gold Trophy NASCAR National Championship Late Model Sportsman races at Old Dominion Speedway in Manassas, Virginia. Just like the better covered Dogwood and Cardinal 500 LMS races at Martinsville, those Old Dominion Speedway races staged by the Gore family featured a who's who of LMS cars and drivers, with 20-30 cars going home not making the fields.

Old Dominion Speedway in Manassas, VA was the site of the June 26th, 1971 Nascar Late Model Sportsman race over the 3/8 mile paved track. The 100-mile race title was The Bill Bogley Gold Trophy Race. Bogley was a Bethesda, MD LincolnMercury dealer that helped promote the race raising the purse to $25000 made up of cash, and prizes. On race day there were 60 entries in the pits trying for the 30 starting positions. Tommy Ellis of Richmond won the pole driving a 1966 Chevelle. When the race started Sonny Hutchins grabbed the lead. By lap 25 it was a 3-way battle for the lead by Hutchins, Hendrick, and Hensley. Ray Hendrick won the battle by taking the checkered flag on lap 267 taking home $1500 for the victory.

I was at that race. Harry Gant brought a '57 Chevy, but didn't fare nearly as well as the '57 of of Coleman Mann from Powhatan who'd later become owner of the famous #00s driven by Al Grinnan.
