The forgotten Norfolk Speedway

Stock Car Racing History

I noticed in the world wide web that there are just few data about the Norfolk Speedwa y in which NASCAR Grand National Division raced in 1956 and 1957 (Billy Myers and Buck Baker the winners). There were also four NASCAR Convertible Division races (one in 1956 and three in 1957). It was a one third mile dirt track.

Someone know the exact place of that track?

Aug. 25th 1951 - The forgotten race at Air Base Speedway (Greenville, SC)

Historic Speedways and Ghost Tracks

So I made a good research and I've got the answer. Looking at https://lta.cr.usgs.gov/ , i catched this:

Coming from town down the Augusta Road going south, turn left at Antioch Church Road. The speedway was 400 yards after crossing Harris Road on the right side of the street, at the entrance of Sundland Distribution Inc.

SOLVED! =)

This site confirms that the Air Base Speedway was previously known as Textile Speedway and Greenville Textile Speedway. It says that the track was located 10 miles south of town on the the Highway 25 near the Donaldson Air Force Base.

There's was also a 1/4 mile track. Both 1/4 and 1/2 mile tracks are noticed as dirt.

There's an article by John Nelson & Tom Schmeh on page 12 of January 2015 SPEED SPORT magazine called "NASCAR's Forgotten Race". Maybe we can know something more if someone's got that one.

Historic Speedways and Ghost Tracks

Hi to everyone. First of all, I want to apoligize because of my language because I'm from Italy.

I've got a question to all of you great historic racing fans. Just one year ago, I noticed from racing-reference.com that the 1951 NASCAR Grand National Division race at Greenville was not helded at Greenville-Pickens Speedway but at the unkown Air Base Speedway. Indeed that race was always recorded as "paved", but the Greenville-Pickens Speedway was dirt until the early seventies.

Someone knows the exact place of that track? Was it at the former Donaldson Air Force Base (now Donaldson Center Airport) or at the former Greenville Municipal Airport (now Greenville Downtown Airport) or somewhere else?

Old Concord Speedway & Billy & Barbara Scott Postings

General

I looked at www.historicaerials.com to know the exact place of the speedway. That site shows 1965 aerial views.

Concord Speedway II (also known as New Concord Speedway, Concord International Speedway and Harris Speedway(not to confuse with Harris Speedway in Harris, NC)) held 12 NASCAR Grand National Division races between 1956 and 1964 and was located in the place now occupied by Channing Circle, near Eva Drive off Poplar Tent Road. The access road to the speedway is now called Speedway Drive.

Concord Speedway I or Old (Oldest) Concord Speedway (also known as Widenhouse-Cadwell Speedway) was located on the street now called Old Speedway Road and it was abandoned in 1965.

There's no trace of any speedway at the cross between Exchange Road and Village Drive (as shown above).

Concord Speedway III is that Little Tricky Triangle near Midland.

Is all that right?
