My first race was a 100 mile NASCAR GN event at (dirt) RAMBI Raceway, Myrtle Beach, SC, in 1962. Richard Petty, Joe Weatherly, and Jack Smith were in the field, but the winner was Ned Jarrett, driving the familiar #11 '62 Chevrolet. I remember, in practice when the track was still wet, 'little' Joe would begin throwing his car ('62 Pontiac #8) into the first turn as soon as he passed the flag-stand. Jack Smith's (#47 '62 Pontiac) seemed to be the loudest car in the race.
Jay and Andy, I agree with you both. In their defense, the owners, who also have a significant investment in NASCAR, apparently, feel they must have some voice in the sport.......while there's something left. NASCAR's continual mantra of declaring the sport to be to be in 'good' health, don't necessarily make it so. With continually shrinking numbers, and sponsors, problems aren't going away. Like us, these mega-owners are well aware of the 'state of the sport'.
I don't have a problem with weather, nobody can control that, and that's always the big uncertainty of outdoor, promotional efforts. Plate racing is insane and NASCAR has options. Isn't one definition of stupidity..."doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.........."? .........As long as plates are used, any and all changes to the cars, makes no NET difference......... because the cars remain exactly the same......... they still wind up in a 40 car wad.
I did not say it was an in-race fix..........when this disaster had played off and on for the entire weekend, NASACAR realized the best scenario would be to stop with the 43 in lead. I've been a Petty fan all my life....
Glad I didn't tend this year's............Firecracker/Coke Zerowhatever400 at Daytona. Was it a Goat Rodeo, or what? This is the highest level of our sport? Seems, after the carnage had played, AND played, NASCAR figured the best possible face, other than the fact that Danica safely negotiated big ones #1 and #2, would be for the 43 to win.......you know, the 30th anniversary of the King's 200th win, and blah, blah, blah. Granted, no one can control the weather, but plate racingcanbe controlled, or better, eliminated. It's just stupid.
